2004 Midvale Speedway Awards Announced

With the 2004 schedule complete, the annual awards banquet was held at the New Philadelphia Elks on Saturday, November 20. The event was held to honor drivers that competed during this past season at Midvale Speedway.

In the Performance Race Fuels Late Model division, New Philadelphia, Ohio driver Farmer Smith took top honors for his 2004-point championship. Bear Schwartz was second in points and also was awarded with the best pit crew and most popular driver awards. Tom Garbrandt finished third, Greg Beule fourth, and Darrel Dexter took home the sportsman of the year award and finished fifth. Doug McMillen was rookie of the year and came home sixth, while most improved driver Rich Marcum finished seventh. Bob Eichel wound up eighth and received the hard luck driver award and Bob Gainer had the best appearing car and completed the season in ninth. Duane Dunn finished tenth.

In the Tolloti Pipe Modifieds, New Philadelphia’s Glen Jewell took home his first career Modified championship after finishing second a couple years in a row. Mark Willison was awarded for the best pit crew and finished second with seven feature wins. Hard luck driver John Wilson finished third, Mike Bowers fourth, and most popular driver and rookie of the year Dave Watson rounded out the top five. Mark Enos was sixth, sportsman of the year Mel Robinson seventh, best appearing car Jim McCune eighth, Keith Thomas ninth, and Tim Skinner tenth. Jim Beatty, Jr. picked up the most improved driver award.

The Tusco Net Sport Stock division Dover, Ohio’s Kevin McClintock was the 2004-point champion. Doug McMillen finished second and took the most popular driver award. Best pit crew with Kurt Waller was third, Don Rufener, Jr. fourth, and Bubba Smith took fifth and rookie of the year and best appearing car honors. Team 5 Racing was sixth, Roger Linard seventh, most improved driver Gabe Pringle was eighth, hard luck driver Roger Butler ninth, and Rich Stalnaker, the sportsman of the year, was tenth.

Papa John’s Pure Stock racing had leading rookie Randy Smart take home the 2004-point championship. Following the Newcomerstown, Ohio driver in the top three were Blake Mackey in the best appearing car and Al Street and his top-notch pit crew. Completing the top five were co-most popular drivers Teddy Oliver and Greg Grove. Sportsman of the year Rich Schweitzer came home sixth with Larry Smith seventh, most improved Bob Passwaters, Jr. eighth, Rob Scott ninth, and D.J. Radanovich/Rick Elkins tenth.

Most popular driver, Kelly McNutt picked up the Compact point championship for the second season in a row. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver was followed by Russell Grandison, hard luck driver Adam Mishler, best appearing car Tom Barrett, and most improved Tye Kelly. Jason Morgan wound up sixth, rookie of the year Bryant Smith was seventh, Perry Nave finished eighth, John McNutt was ninth, and Kenny Jewell wound up tenth. Terry Colletti won the sportsman of the year award.
