Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | September 19, 2004 |
Over 140 different vehicles competed this past weekend at Midvale Speedway in the 2004-Budweiser Run Whatya Brung Fall Classic. There were four official divisions of racing. Legends, Minivan Figure 8’s, Compact Figure 8’s, and the big Run Whatya Brung class were on the ticket.
21 cars lined up for the 50-lap A-Main. After Saturday qualifying, the fastest cars were locked into the event that paid $1,500 to win and $200 to start. Foster Mackey, Jr. in his Barberton Speedway Street Stock and Jeff Smith in his Modified were the front row starters. Smith took the early lead before Greg Beule, in his Late Model, was able to take the top spot away. Beule led for many laps before Mike Miller started to pressure him. Miller ran the high lane for several laps, trying to make it work, but turn two helped Beule keep the lead. Finally, Miller dropped back to the inside lane and worked Beule to the lowside off of the second corner. Lap-after-lap, Beule’s car seemed to develop a worse push and that eventually allowed Miller to get a run on him. The Clinton, Ohio driver raced out front, while Beule got shuffled back in the high lane. Eventually, a yellow helped Beule finish with a top five, but Rick Sibila in his Modified and Tom Garbrandt in his Late Model took second and third. Sibila, Garbrandt, Beule, and John Wilson in his Modified followed the Allied Auto/R&R Carb #53 in the official rundown. The rest of the top ten were Mark Willison’s Modified, Bob Sibila’s Sunoco Super Series Late Model, A.P. Ren’s Late Model, Darrel Dexter’s Late Model, and Jeff Smith’s Modified.
The 40-lap B-Main featured a 16-car starting field with one Late Model, one Modified, one Pure Stock, and a lot of Sport Stocks. As expected, the Late Model was the one to beat, as Ron Jaberg, Jr. came from mid-pack to take the early lead. Once out front, Jaberg had to watch his speed so that he would not end up with a speeding ticket. His qualifying time on Saturday was a 15.62, but the New Philadelphia driver was safe turning times in the high 15’s on Sunday. His main concern was Johnny Buckshot in the #00 Street Stock, as the driver moved into second and started to pressure the leader. However, the handle on Buckshot’s car went away, giving Jaberg the room he needed to come away with his first career feature victory. The final finish had Jaberg taking home the $800 prize, with Buckshot second, Kevin McClintock third, Bubba Smith fourth, and Don Rufener, Jr. fifth. The rest of the top finishers were John Tantarelli, Jr, Jesse Page, Cody Kahler, Bill Weaver, and Chris Kail.
Greg Grove raced out front early in the 35-lap C-Main. The race paid $500 to the winner and gave $50 to start. Grove, from Tuscarawas, had Best Racing teammate Randy Smart in second, as the duo pulled away from the rest of the field. However, Jason Gallagher came from the back and was there to pass Smart in the middle of the race. Shortly thereafter, Gallagher began putting the pressure on Grove. Grove saw him in the mirror and decided that the bottom lane would be the place to run, giving Gallagher the whole outside lane. Gallagher tried the high-lane several times, but each time his car would kick loose. On the final circuit, Grove came off of turn four with the victory, while Smart and Gallagher had a collision between three and four. Following the J.D. Byrider #3 in the official rundown were Rich Schweitzer, Chris Mick, Paul Parson, and Terry Colletti. Randy Smart was scored sixth, Gallagher seventh, and John Leasure, Rob Scott, and Gavin Sekulich completed the top ten.
In the 30-lap D-Main, Tom Barrett raced out front early and took a sizable lead in his Compact. Unfortunately for Barrett, Mike Mason, driving a Street Stock, qualified badly on Saturday, lining him up for the same feature. Mason raced quickly through the field and put his car in the high lane for a two-car race lead battle. For almost the whole race, the two ran side-by-side with Barrett right on the bottom and Mason right along the wall. At the finish, Barrett was going to try and close the door on Mason, but the West Virginia driver came home victorious. Barrett finished second, while Adam Mishler, Randy Cecil, and David Breehl completed the top five. Jim Poole, James Domer, Bryant Smith, Russell Grandison, and Phil Veno finished off the top ten.
Bill Bitticker, who has raced at Midvale Speedway one time per every season that the track has been open, was the early leader of the E-Main. Bubba Smith was on the move in his Compact and raced around the Nova that Bitticker was driving, as the veteran driver was being cautious to not go under his time. A lap or so later, Bitticker wanted to get out front so he ducked to the lowside of Smith off of two. Smith tried to close the door, the two made contact, and Smith spun into the infield. Unluckily for Bitticker, while driving into turn three, his front bumper when underneath the front wheels giving him no steering or brakes and he slammed the turn three wall at nearly full speed. Thankfully, Bitticker was okay despite the hard hit. Smith went on to pick up the feature victory, while Jason Morgan, Dan Grewell, Mark Adkins, and Tad Grove finished with top fives. Jesse Page, Jerry Adkins, Mike Carnes, Linda Morgan, and Don Rufener, Jr. finished with top tens.
In the final Run Whatya Brung feature, Earl Scranton held off Dale Beatty to pick up the victory. Scranton took home $75 with the victory, while Beatty, Pat Carnes, Jim DiBona, and Jeff Schafer rounded out the top five. Lissa Courtney finished sixth, while Neil Rolli, Jason Anthony, J.T. Turner, and Ben Gibson finished the top ten.
In the 30-lap Legend car feature, Rick Riffle had a comfortable lead before a restart either had him surprised or the car faltered and he dropped back into the field. Dennis Knox took advantage by racing out front, while Jason Knox took second. For Dennis Knox, it was his third win in a row at Midvale. Jason Miller came from the back to take third, while Riffle and Davis completed the top five. Tom Spisak, Fred Davis, Randy Burns, Mike Luke, and Addison Rogers were the rest of the top ten.
Jaimie Huebner, Jr. took victory in the Dale’s Heating & Cooling Minivan Figure 8 feature after he and Bubba Smith battled for the lead. Smith used a bump and run to pass Huebner. Huebner returned the favor moments later and Smith’s van flipped quicked over to land on its wheels. Huebner was followed in the top four by Bryant Smith, Jason Morgan, and Josh Ousley.
In the Compact Figure 8, Mark Adkins came away with the victory, while Mike Carnes, Bubba Smith, Chris Smith, and Dale Beatty rounded out the top five.
Racing for the 2004-racing season has come to an end. The awards banquet will be held on Saturday, November 20 at the New Philadelphia Elks. Information on ticket purchases will be available at the speedway website very soon.
