Ford Takes Exciting Compact Feature Win
August 21, 2004

Ford Takes Exciting Compact Feature Win
108 drivers were in the pits to compete for race wins on Ferris Chevrolet/Texas Roadhouse night at Midvale Speedway. Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and the wild Minivan Figure 8’s all raced on a great night of entertainment.

The fast feature in the Compact division was the race of the night, maybe the season. Jim Miller and his son-in-law Kenny Ford made up the first row for the 15-lap feature. With the race under green, Miller and Ford raced alongside each other, with really no one taking control. Behind them, drivers were shuffling for position trying to get to the front. In all, the top ten cars, in rows of two, three, and even four battled for the fast feature victory. Lap-after-lap the drivers continued to race this way with very little contact ever taking place. Russell Grandison put on an impressive show in the outside lane, as he tried to win using a three-wide outside pass. However, each time he attempted, the cars of Miller and Ford were able to slide back out front. At flagman Bernie Booth’s checkered flag, Ford surprised his father-in-law by taking the top spot and his sixth win of the year in a four-wide finish, while Miller, Grandison, Tom Barrett, and Tye Kelly completed the top five. The rest of the top ten were Kelly McNutt, Bryant Smith, Jason Morgan, Eric Anderson, and Adam Mishler.

In the Performance Race Fuels Late Model feature, Bob Schneider, Jr. and Darrel Dexter started up front. On the original start, Dexter raced out front, but yellow flew as the top two got together in the third turn. That created a complete restart and new hope for Schneider, as he took the lead on that start. The car on the move was that of Tom Garbrandt’s. The veteran driver had just moved the nose of his car in the lead when Schneider slipped up the banking in the second turn. The car of Garbrandt spun, but neither driver felt that the accident was of their doing, so they both went to the back. That handed Farmer Smith the lead and most thought that the race would be boring and basically over from that point on. However, Garbrandt put on a great show to eventually move all the way back into the second spot. At the finish, Garbrandt, Dexter, Bear Schwartz, and Schneider followed Smith, in the J.D. Byrider/Martin Homes #7 to his third feature win. Bob Scott, Tom Feller, Jr., Greg Beule, Bob Gainer, and Rich Marcum completed the top ten. Marcum and Eichel won the heats, while Gainer set fast time.

For the second week in a row, Mark Willison and Glen Jewell started at the back of the Tolloti Pipe Modified feature. Last week, Jewell beat Willison to the front in a clinic the two drivers put on. This week, both drivers were racing to the front again, but in a different outcome, as Willison, the top qualifier, was able to get by Jewell and into the lead first. It came after a great side-by-side battle between Jim Beatty, Jr., Rick Elkins, Jr. and Mark Enos, as the three drivers race for the lead. However, Elkins slid up allowing Willison by and shortly thereafter, Beatty and Enos were taken out of contention with a turn three contact/spin. On the restart, Willison was the new leader, while Elkins and Jewell followed. Willison quickly pulled away, while Jewell raced around Elkins for second. By the finish, Jewell had run down Willison but never pulled alongside, as Willison picked up his seventh feature victory of the season, tying him with Jewell for the most. The Minerva, Ohio driver in his Selway Heating & Cooling car was followed by Jewell, Elkins, Enos, and Dave Watson as top five finishers. The rest of the finishing cars were Mel Robinson, Beatty, and Mike Bowers. Beatty won the heat race.

In the Tusco Net Sport Stock feature, Larry Pringle led the early laps of the 20-circuit grind. However, mechanical problems sent him to the infield, as Keith Thomas raced out front from his sixth starting position. Thomas, filling in for Kurt Waller for the rest of the season, easily picked up the feature victory, while Doug McMillen, Bill Aubihl, Gabe Pringle, and Kevin McClintock finished off the top five. Don Rufener, Jr., Paul Murray, Rich Stalnaker, Bill Weaver, and Steve Lute completed the top ten. Thomas and McMillen won the heats, while McClintock set fast time.

Rob Scott, the polesitter, led the early stages of the 20-lap Papa John’s Pure Stock feature. Rich Schweitzer, using the outside lane, was able to take the spot away, while Teddy Oliver took second right before a yellow came out. Josh Grove and Scott Archer both made strong runs at Schweitzer, but the outside lane was not to the liking of many drivers in the Pure Stock race, as an earlier liquid spill in the first turn was not drying real well. Schweitzer, in his Roundhouse Auto Tech/Sugarcreek Industries #84, held on for the victory over Randy Smart, Grove, Craig Coventry, and Blake Mackey. Al Street, Rob Scott, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Larry Smith, and Paul Parson completed the top ten. Mackey, Schweitzer, and Kenny Feister won the heats, while Smart set fast time.

The Dale’s Heating & Cooling Minivan Figure 8 feature turned out to be as exciting a figure 8 feature as the track has seen this season. Shawn Smarsh led every lap but the final one as Bubba Smith came from the back to make a three wide pass of Smarsh and a lapped van on the final lap for a final margin victory of a bumper cover. Following the J.D. Byrider van of Smith were Smarsh, Chip Fry, and Jason Morgan.

In the second Compact feature, Kenny Jewell picked up the win, as Jesse Page, James Domer, Bubba Smith, and Billy Hilliker followed. Eric Feister, Chris Smith, Bob Viertel, Linda Morgan, and Mike Roth completed the top ten. Compact preliminary wins went to Russell Grandison, Perry Nave, Bubba Smith, and James Domer. Kelly McNutt set fast time.

Racing will continue this Saturday, August 28, as all five divisions will be on hand with a sixth division, the Legend cars. Entertainment starts before racing begins with a classic car show in the parking lot from 4-6:30. At intermission of the night’s program a kids ride in racecar night will be held for all kids in the audience. Qualifying begins at 4, while racing will start at 6:30.
