Tedesco Takes Late Model Win
August 14, 2004

Tedesco Takes Late Model Win
Over 105 cars were in the pits this past Saturday night, August 14, to be raced at Midvale Speedway. Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were on hand for a regular night of action, while a pit crew competition was held at intermission.

For the second week in a row, a solid field of Late Models were on hand to run the Performance Race Fuels 25 lapper. Bob Schneider, Jr. and Darrel Dexter started in the front row of the main event, and Schneider, making his first start of the season raced into the lead. As Dexter dropped back a spot or two, Dusty Woodie moved into second and Ryan Tedesco started his move from the eighth position. After several laps had passed, Tedesco had moved into the third position and had only Woodie and Schneider as road blocks to his first win this season at Midvale. With little time needed, Tedesco had his second strong run in a row payoff, as the New Philadelphia driver raced into the lead and out front for the remaining circuits. At the finish, the current runner-up in ASA Late Model points bested Schneider, Woodie, Dexter, and Doug McMillen. Tom Garbrandt, Greg Beule, Bob Gainer, Todd Ripley, and Rich Marcum completed the top ten. Bear Schwartz and Farmer Smith, the top two in Midvale points, were eliminated after Smith had an engine lockup in the first corner and Schwartz had suspension failure while braking to avoid the spinning Smith. Tedesco and Schneider won the heats, while Schwartz set fast time.

In the Tolloti Pipe Modified 20-lapper, Midvale’s top two open-wheel drivers put on an absolute clinic. Mark Willison, the night’s fastest qualifier, and Glen Jewell, the second fastest qualifier started in the tenth and ninth positions respectively. As soon as the green dropped, Jewell started his moves and Willison followed as they moved through the remaining cars, picking them off one at a time. Jim Beatty, Jr. was having a great run, leading the field around the 3/10-mile oval until Jewell went to the outside. Jewell made the move just in time to negate the outside lane pass that Willison was just about to try. Willison followed Jewell, hounded him, but was not quite fast enough to work around the veteran driver. It was the seventh feature win of the year for the Texas Roadhouse/J.D Byrider #24. Willison, Mark Enos, John Wilson, and Beatty completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Tim Skinner, Mel Robinson, Jim McCune, Will Walker, and Mike Bowers. Willison won the heat and also set fast time.

Gabe Pringle and Doug McMillen raced side-by-side for the lead for a couple of laps at the start of the Tusco Net Sport Stock feature. McMillen eventually used the outside lane to his advantage and raced out front. Pringle settle into the second spot, while Keith Thomas, Bubba Smith, and Kevin McClintock raced behind him. Once the first handful of laps were complete, the top several spots looked to be a lock, as no one made any serious challenges. McMillen picked up his fifth feature win in the Sport Stock class, while Pringle, Thomas, Smith, and McClintock followed the Dale’s Heating & Cooling/Lee’s Famous Recipe #54 across the stripe. Don Rufener, Jr., Terry Colletti, Rich Stalnaker, Paul Murray, and Chris Kail completed the top ten. McMillen and Murray won the heat race events, while Smith set fast time.

In the Papa John’s Pure Stock class, Craig Coventry, by way of his fourth starting position, raced into the lead in the early going. Coventry, a rookie competitor who purchased the car from one-time track record holder Doug Decker, led the field around, while dicing took place behind him. The race went on to go flag-to-flag, just like the Sport Stock feature, and Coventry picked up his first feature victory over Scott Archer, Chuck Elkins, Mike Martin, and Randy Smart. Paul Parson, Blake Mackey, Doug Higgins, Rich Schweitzer, and Rob Scott finished off the top ten.

In the second Pure Stock feature, Bob Passwaters, Sr. worked his way from the fifth starting spot to go on to victory. Chris Miller, Dan Moore, Nick Cross, and Kenny Feister followed the Waynesburg, Ohio driver. Rick Hoffman, Jeff Anthony, Richard Hambleton, Butch Knepper, and Chuck Sampson finished off the top ten. Pure Stock heat wins went to Coventry, Higgins, and Passwaters, Sr.

The Compacts put on the best heat races of the night and picked up where they left off, as in the fast feature, side-by-side racing was the norm. Jim Poole and Jason Morgan, front row starters, were also the early front-runners in the 15-lapper. Eventually though, Dennison, Ohio driver Tom Barrett worked his way from the seventh position to go out front and pull away for his second feature victory of the season. Jim Poole, McNutt, Bryant Smith, and Morgan followed Barrett. Tye Kelly, Jim Miller, Adam Mishler, Kenny Ford, and Perry Nave completed the top ten.

In the second feature, Kyle Grewell made a slick move underneath a duo of Bubba Smith and Janna Shaw to pull of a feature victory. Smith, Tammy Rufener, Kenny Jewell, and Josh Truxall finished off the top five. The rest of the top ten were Jesse Page, James Domer, Kelly Wissman, Janna Shaw, and Mickey Green.

Linda Morgan fended off a last-lap challenge from Jerry Kimble to head to victory lane. Kimble’s car was then found to have heated springs, handing second to Mike Roth. Jason Anthony, J.R. Smith, and Paul Stull completed the top five. Gary Gibson, John Wissman, Chris Smith, Bruce Gibson, and Cody Shuss finished off the top ten.

In the first annual pit crew competition, the crew of Keith Thomas’ Sport Stock made a two tire change quicker than any other. Time started when the car was given the green flag to pull into its pit box and time was stopped when the car completely exited the pit box. Divisional competition winners were Bear Schwartz(LM), Mark Willison(MOD), Al Street(PS), and Kelly McNutt(C).

Racing will continue this Saturday night, August 21, as the Minivan Figure 8’s will be back in action. Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will also race. Action starts at 6:30.
