Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | July 28, 2004 |
Despite ugly skies, the Modified Ohio Invitational was held this past Wednesday, July 28 at Midvale Speedway. Modifieds ran 100 laps, while Pure Stocks, Compacts, and the Minivan Figure 8’s were also on hand. Racing on Saturday, July 31 was cancelled due to heavy rain and flooding at the speedway.
Glen Jewell set fast time for the Modified 100 and drew the number seven pill, starting him seventh in the main event. That put seventh fastest qualifier Mark Willison, Jewell’s biggest weekly competition on the pole.
Willison led comfortably out front in the early going of the race until Jewell worked his way through the field and into the second spot well before the halfway point. The New Philadelphia driver looked to have the better car and was expected to challenge Willison before halfway. However, the first half of the race was plagued with several cautions, keeping that from happening.
When the green dropped on the second half, Jewell hounded Willison by riding nose-to-tail for much of the latter stages. Willison, whose Selway Heating & Cooling #18 had a push develop in the second half, did all he could to keep his car on the bottom and in front of the field. As the laps wore down, Jewell was only able to muster a couple of looks to the inside lane, and Willison went on to his biggest career victory.
Following the Minerva driver across the line were Jewell, John Wilson with a solid third place finish, Baldy Baker, Jr. and Dave Watson. Completing the top ten were Mark Enos, Mike Bowers, Jeff Smith, Mel Robinson, and Matt Leedy.
In the Papa John’s Pure Stock division, Chuck Elkins held of a challenging field of 20 competitors for his first career victory in that division. Elkins, whose car is for sale, held off veteran Rich Schweitzer, Teddy Oliver, Josh Grove, and Doug Higgins. Rob Scott, Blake Mackey, Bob Passwaters, Sr., Tim Rodgers, and Dan Moore were the rest of the top ten. Higgins, Passwaters, Jr., and John Leasure were heat race winners, while Grove set fast time.
In the fast feature for the Compacts, Bubba Smith, of Canton, started up front for the 15-lap A-Main. Kelly McNutt, the point leader, started toward the final rows but after being boxed in moved quickly through the field. However, Smith had a little to much ground on McNutt at the finish, as he crossed the line in the number one position. Following the JLK Hood Cleaning/Broad Trucking #12 were McNutt, Perry Nave, Jason Morgan, and Don Rufener, Jr. Tye Kelly, Tom Barrett, Bryant Smith, Kyle Grewell, and Adam Mishler finished off the top ten.
Jesse Page, of Waynesburg, picked up the second feature victory. Kenny Jewell, Mike Roth, Josh Irwin, and James Domer wrapped up the top five. Other top ten finishers were Earl Scranton, Troy McMath, Bruce Gibson, Ryan Kopp, and Walter Cline. Compact preliminary races went to Perry Nave, Mike Gribble, Kenny Jewell, and Josh Irwin. Tom Barrett set fast time.
Minerva, Ohio driver Jason Morgan won the Dale’s Heating & Cooling Minivan Figure 8 race.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday night, August 7, as the Spectator Drags will be held with the regular five divisions. The McDonald's car show has again been rescheduled to the 28th of August. Racing this Saturday starts at 6:30.
