Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | July 24, 2004 |
The car count improved to 144 cars this past Saturday night at Midvale Speedway. Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were on hand running double features to make-up for a partial rainout a couple of weeks ago, and the Legends were on hand running their regular program.
In the Performance Race Fuels Late Model division, Bear Schwartz started on the outside of the front row in the make-up feature and beat pole-sitter Bob Gainer to turn one to take the lead. Schwartz stayed out front until a late race caution put Gainer and Farmer Smith right on his bumper. Smith was able to get by Gainer on the restart, but was never able to put a run on Schwartz for the win. The New Image Homes/Trico Construction Car was followed by Smith, Tom Garbrandt, Greg Beule, and Darrel Dexter. Bob Gainer, Doug McMillen, and Bob Eichel completed the finishers.
In the second Late Model feature, Schwartz was scheduled to start in the second position, but Doug McMillen’s #78 racer had mechanical problems and that slotted Schwartz on the pole. The New Philadelphia driver had a mirror-full of Gainer and Smith, but went on to take the clean sweep of the double features. Gainer, Smith, Garbrandt, and Rich Marcum completed the top five. Beule, Dusty Woodie, William Robinson, Mike Dawson, and Darrel Dexter finished off the top ten.
In the Tolloti Pipe Modified make-up feature, Ron McBride raced out front, as he looked for his first career feature win. With about five laps to go, a caution came out and McBride stopped on the backstretch. Officials were told that liquid was coming from one of the cars, and McBride had some on the track when he stopped. Unfortunately, that relegated him to the pits as his season of bad luck continues. That gave the lead to Glen Jewell who went on to pick up his fifth feature win of the 2004-racing season. Following the Texas Roadhouse/J.D. Byrider #24 were Mark Willison, Mark Enos, Mike Bowers, and Jim McCune. Rick Elkins, Jr., Tim Skinner, Ron McBride, Jim Beatty, Jr., and Mel Robinson finished off the top ten.
As the second feature race went without a caution flag, Jewell and Dave Watson used the outside lane to pick cars off one at a time. In an amazing effort, Jewell raced from the final row to the front of the field and passed race leader Mark Enos for the top spot. Watson followed Jewell, as Enos dropped to third. At the finish, Jewell recorded the win to make it two-for-two on the evening, which makes him the favorite for the Ohio Invitational 100 on Wednesday night. Watson, Enos, Bowers, and McCune rounded out the top five. Elkins, John Wilson, Robinson, Skinner, and Willison completed the top ten.
The make-up feature in the Tusco Net Sport Stock division was also very exciting. Doug McMillen raced into the lead and Bubba Smith into second very early in the 20-lap event. Smith, faster in his #12 racer, looked as though he would be able to get by McMillen rather easily. However, as lap-after-lap went into the books, McMillen ran a perfect lane on the inside of the track in his Dale’s Heating & Cooling/Haas Body Shop #54 to keep his nose out front. Several times Smith pulled alongside to no avail and McMillen brought home the victory. Smith took second, while Keith Thomas, Rich Stalnaker, and Bill Aubihl rounded out the top five. Calvin Collins, Dougie Cross, Kevin McClintock, Joe Sanford, Jr., and Don Rufener, Jr. rounded out the top ten.
In the regular Sport Stock feature, Gabe Pringle, Doug McMillen, and Bubba Smith were the cars racing to the front. Pringle, looking for his first career Sport Stock win, got into the lead and never looked back. McMillen, Smith, Thomas, and McClintock followed the Tusco Net/TeenKillers.Com #8. Bill Weaver, Rufener, Chris Kail, and Sanford finished off the top ten.
Pure Stock racing saw 24 cars start the 20-lap makeup feature. Cautions plagued the event, relegating it to just 13 laps, however that gave Al Street just enough time to pull out front for the victory. Chuck Elkins, Joe Oliver, Randy Smart, and Teddy Oliver followed the Mark’s Auto Body/Southwest Automotive #73 in the official rundown. The rest of the top ten were Blake Mackey, Craig Coventry, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Chris Miller, and Tim Postel.
In the second feature, Scott Archer got out front early in his Arch-a-motive #28. Randy Smart, the point leader, took second but was not able to get by the Canton driver to move into the lead. Archer picked up his first feature win of the year, while Smart, Greg Grove, Teddy Oliver, and Paul Parson completed the top five. Rich Schweitzer, Larry Smith, Street, Elkins, and Rocky Moore finished off the top ten.
The slow feature saw Joe Oliver pick up the win over Rob Scott, Doug Higgins, Chris Miller, and Dave Fox, Jr. Nick Cross, Tim Rodgers, Richard Hambleton, D.J. Radanovich, and Dan Moore completed the top ten.
In Compact divison racing, Tom Barrett picked up his first career “fast” feature win in the makeup feature. Tye Kelly, Adam Mishler, Bryant Smith, and Kelly McNutt followed the East High Arby’s/Musick & Son Heating & Cooling #157 across the line. Perry Nave, Kyle Grewell, Jim Poole, Josh Irwin, and Tammy Rufener rounded out the top ten finishers.
In the regular fast feature, Kelly McNutt, the point leader, picked up the convincing victory in his KM Cages/United Auto Sales #36 over Russell Grandison, Nave, Smith, and Mishler. Poole, Troy McMath, Barrett, Terry McNutt, and Ron Myers rounded out the top ten.
In second Compact features, Jim Miller won the first one followed by Kenny Ford, McMath, Earl Scranton, and Mike Gribble. The other victory went to Kenny Ford, as Tracy Lovell was dq’ed for illegal springs. Chris Smith, Irwin, Richard Duvall, and Gribble rounded out the top five.
In the first “third” Compact feature, the win was taken by Bubba Smith. Kenny Jewell, Shawn Musick, Billy Hilliker, and Smith finished off the top five. The other slow Compact feature win went to Hilliker, while he was followed by Jewell, Bruce Gibson, Paul Stull, and Ryan Kopp.
The Legend race had three laps to go when a caution came out putting Larry Young on the rear bumper of Dennis Knox. When the green again flew, Young worked by Knox on the inside lane and looked to be on his way to victory. However, a lap later, Knox drove back to the inside to take the lead back away from Young and went on to pickup the victory. Young took second, while Tim Davis, Bill Richards, and Bob Swann finished off the top five. Shawn Szep, Randy Burns, Mark Wills, Jim Bennett, and Paul Hennessey finished off the top ten.
Racing will continue this coming Wednesday, July 28, as the Modified Ohio Invitational 100 will be held. The Modifieds will be running 100 laps, going for $2,000 to win and $150 to start. Pure Stocks, Compacts, and the Minivan Figure 8’s will also be in action. Pits open at 4:30, Practice is at 4:45, Grandstands open at 5:30, Qualifying starts at 6:15, and the racing begins at 8:00 P.M. For more information, go to midvalespeedway.com.
