Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | April 29, 2000 |
After Mother Nature wreaked havoc causing the cancellation of the April 22 event, the weather took a complete turn for the better for the season opener this past Saturday night. A healthy crowd saw a large field of 85 cars compete for double points to start off the 2000 season.
There were fifteen Smoker’s Paradise Late Models on hand, while fourteen took the green flag in the 25-lap feature, as Bob Eichel could not compete due to mechanical problems earlier in the evening. Mike Dynes and Darryl Dexter started at the front of the field with Dexter jumping out to the early lead. Dexter led for a handful of laps before 1999 Street Stock track champion Ron Dague started his charge on the outside groove. The fourth quick qualifier of the evening came from near the rear of the field to take the lead before the halfway point had arrived. Barnhill, OH’s Dague, driving the Selway Heating/Lewton Race Engine #48, was able to pull away from Marcus Malcuit, Bob Sibila, Farmer Smith, and A.P. Ren for the victory. Finishing in positions six through ten were Mack Gribble, Jr., Bobby Allensworth, Bob Scott, Tom Garabrandt, and Dexter. Teammates Russ Moore, Jr. and Dynes were eliminated in a grinding crash when Moore spun in turn two and Dynes was unable to avoid him. Picking up heat wins were Allensworth and Brian Volk.
In the 20-lap Ohio Modified main event, the night’s top qualifier and second year modified competitor, Tim Allensworth charged through the field and picked up the win in his Raco Transmission/Buckeye Precision #11 car. Following him across the line were John White, Mark Striker-who made his first ever modified start, Butch Erickson, and Mike Gilland. Jim McCune, John Wilson, and Mike Abramczyk rounded out the rest of the feature field. Bob Kachenko, Jr., Mike Buchanan, Dusty Woodie, and Jeff Walker all had early ends to their evenings with mechanical problems. Walker did, however, pick up the heat win.
The Tusco Net Detroit Irons saw sixteen automobiles take the green in their 20 lap main. Dennison’s Jimmy Orr looked to have his car in cruise control for much of the race as he had a commanding lead. Kevin McClintock never said die, as he dove inside of Orr going into turn three on the final lap. The two rubbed paint coming out of turn four, Orr spun, and McClintock, the top qualifier, crossed the line first for the exciting victory. Following the Glass Lumber/Square Deal car across the line were Tim Skinner, Roger Butler, William Aubihl, and Lee McCreery. Rounding out the top ten were Chris White, Nikki Shafer, Calvin Collins, Don Rufener, Jr., and Tammy Randolph. White and Rufener picked up the heat wins.
Canton’s John Leasure was able to hang on, despite loose conditions, to win the Pure Stock feature. Leasure, in the Canton Auto Salvage/Mark’s Auto Body #12, won the first feature held in the new division for 2000. Crossing the line after Leasure were Larry Smith, Mike Powell, Shane Billiter, and Dan Rummes. Uhrichsville’s Mike Powell won the heat.
Thirty-two Canton Auto Salvage Compacts were on hand and were divided into two different features. Canton’s Tim Nagel crossed the line first in feature one, but was disqualified for illegal wheels. That handed the win to 1999 track champ, Josh Grove. Rounding out the top five were Brian Ridgeway, Lisa Dague, Terry McNutt, and Mike Martin.
In Compact feature #2, it was Dave Malone picking up his first feature win. Adam Ridgeway, Garry Lute, Paul Parson, and Darryl Boitnott followed Malone across the stripe. Picking up heat wins were Brian Ridgeway, Greg Grove, and Jason Nealy.
This coming Saturday, May 6, Midvale Speedway will once again have the Late Models, Ohio Modifieds, Detroit Irons, Pure Stocks, and Compacts on hand. Going in to week two, the point leaders are Farmer Smith (Late Models), Tim Allensworth (Ohio Modifieds), Kevin McClintock (Detroit Irons), Mike Powell (Pure Stocks), and Josh Grove (Compacts). Pits open at 3, Grandstands at 4, Qualifying at 5, and Racing Action at 7.
