Ice Wins Main Event 150
July 3, 2004

Ice Wins Main Event 150
The Main Event Racing Series made their one and only appearance at Midvale Speedway this past Friday night, July 2. Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were also there.

When the green dropped for the Downtown Ford Main Event 150, polesitter Scott Baker was able to beat outside front row starter Marcus Malcuit off of the second turn. As the middle of the field bunched up, nearly wrecking, Rich Rohrer took second from Malcuit as he dropped into the third spot. Malcuit’s night ended shortly thereafter, as his car slammed into the frontstretch wall after racing with Dino Long for the fourth spot.

On lap 26, Rohrer, after following Baker for the first 25 laps, decided to go to the outside off of the fourth turn. Within one lap, Rohrer became the new leader after an impressive pass, while Baker dropped into second. A few laps later, Gary Whipkey and Long were able to take second and third as Baker fell to fourth.

The second caution came out with 44 laps in, 33 from the halfway point. After the Dan Fults and Tony DePaulo spin, Whipkey was able to close back in to the rear bumper of Rohrer after he had built up a half-track lead. The final caution during the first half of the race came out with 70 laps in. It was thrown for Greg Beule and Dan Fults who were racing for a position in the top ten.

At lap 75, the caution was thrown for drivers to fuel up and make adjustments. At that point, a dice roll took place, determining how many cars to invert for the second 75. Unluckily for the leader Rohrer, a number six came up and put the sixth place driver Tim Ice on the pole for the start of the final 75. Don Harvey, Jr., Scott Baker, Dino Long, Gary Whipkey, and Rich Rohrer completed the top six.

When the race went green after the break, Ice was able to pull away from Harvey and the rest of the field. Back a few spots, Rohrer, who had the fastest car in the field, worked hard trying to get by Whipkey for fifth. Several times, he looked to the outside, but the car would not stick to make the move.

The next caution came out on lap 104 for Fults and DePaulo. After the restart, Ice had his car’s handle go away and Harvey was all over him. Lap-after-lap Harvey tried to slingshot under him the second turn. Finally, with around 20 laps to go, Harvey got his nose underneath the leader in the middle of turns one and two. However, coming off of the second corner, the two cars touched and Ice went spinning. That relegated the #12 of Harvey to the tail after an impressive run, and put the #65 of Ice back out front.

Over the last laps, Ice pulled away from Baker, but an exciting race was taking place in the field as Harvey and Fults raced for position back in the field. The duo was side-by-side for at least ten laps, as Fults held on to the spot.

For Ice, driving the Howe Racing Enterprises/Fast Racing Engines #65, it was his third Midvale win in his last five tries. The veteran driver won both Main Event races at the track in the 2002 season. Baker, Long, Whipkey, and Rohrer completed the top five. Cord Ehrhart, A.P. Ren, Fults, Harvey, and Bob Gainer completed the top ten.

In the Tolloti Pipe Modified division, Rick Elkins, Jr. making his second Modified start and Tim Skinner brought the 15-car field in for the green. Elkins, who looked to have a handful started dropping back as Tim Skinner took the lead. Skinner, looking for his first feature win in the Modified class had Ron McBride on his rear bumper. McBride dove the lowside going into turn three and the top two cars made contact. Skinner spun and damage caused him to retire from the event. McBride went to the tail in what became another frustrating night for the second-year driver. That put Minerva, Ohio driver Mark Willison out front, as he looked for his fifth feature win of the season. The veteran driver did not have to look too hard, as he scored victory at the end of the 20-lapper. John Wilson, Mark Enos, Glen Jewell, and Baldy Baker, Jr. finished off the top five. Completing the top ten were John White, Rick Sibila, Elkins, McBride, and Mel Robinson. Glen Jewell set fast time.

In the Tusco Net Sport Stock division, Rob Hooper and Kevin McClintock started on the front row for the 20-lap event. After a couple of failed starts due to cautions in the field, McClintock raced into the lead with Kurt Waller taking second. Roger Linard and Doug McMillen were also in the top few competitors at the front of the field. As the race wore on, it was clear to see that no one had anything for the top qualifier and McClintock pulled away for his third feature win of the season. Following the Dover, Ohio driver were McMillen, Waller, Linard, and Bubba Smith. Don Rufener, Jr., Gabe Pringle, Roger Butler, Rob Hooper, and Paul Murray completed the top ten.

Outside polesitter Bob Passwaters, Jr. led in the early going of the 15-lap Papa John’s Pure Stock event. After building up a big lead, the first of several cautions flew, creating a bunched up field. Teddy Oliver and Greg Grove had moved into second and third and the duo raced three wide with Passwaters for the lead before a caution came out. Later, after Oliver took the lead, Grove got shuffled back and involved in an accident that relegated him to the pits. Oliver, of Canton, Ohio, was able to go on and pick up the victory with Al Street and Blake Mackey finishing close behind. Passwaters finished fourth, while Mike Martin came home fifth. Chuck Elkins, Randy Smart, Rob Scott, Curtis Collins, and D.J. Radanovich completed the top ten. Grove set fast time.

In the fast feature for the Compact division, Perry Nave started up front, as he looked for his first feature win of the season. Moving through the field, picking off competitor after competitor was Terry McNutt making his first start of the season. The Medina, Ohio driver raced all the way into the second position from his eighth starting spot but ran out of time at the finish. Nave went on to the victory, while McNutt crossed the line in second. However, McNutt was so excited he turned back into his pits before going through the tech line, causing him to lose his second place finish. Following Nave in the official rundown were Tye Kelly, Kyle Grewell, Adam Mishler, and Russell Grandison. Rounding out the top ten were Jason Morgan, Jim Poole, Ron Myers, Mickey Green, and Don Rufener, Jr.

Bubba Smith picked up the second feature win in the Compacts, while Jesse Page, Bryant Smith, Josh Irwin, and Jim Miller finished off the top five. Earl Scranton, Chris Smith, Jerry Kimble, Rob Scott, and Bob Viertel rounded out the top ten. Kenny Jewell was the original third place finisher but was found with heated springs.

In the third Compact feature, Tracy Lovell and Cody Shuss, father and son, finished first and second, but both cars were found to have heated springs, giving the win to Justin Lawson. Kelly Wissman, Jason Anthony, Ryan Kopp, and Pat Carnes completed the top five. Mike Roth, Paul Stull, John Wissman, Jr., Mike Carnes, and Jill Harshey finished the top ten.

Racing will continue this coming Saturday, July 10, as the Kid’s Bicycle Races will be held. Any girl or boy ages 16 and under need to bring their bikes to the track to compete. Several different races will be held and trophies and prizes will be given away. Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will also race. The evening’s action starts with qualifying at 4, while racing will start at 6:30.
