Sibila And Enos Take Mid-Season Crowns
June 26, 2004

Sibila And Enos Take Mid-Season Crowns
116 cars filled the pits for the 2004 Mid-Season Championships at Midvale Speedway. Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were all on hand, plus the Minivan Figure 8’s.

Mike Miller and Rich Marcum brought the field of Performance Race Fuels Late Models in for the green flag in their 25-lap feature event. In turn three, before the start, slight contact took place between third place starter Bob Gainer and polesitter Mike Miller. Gainer backed off, while Miller straightened his car out. As the cars exited turn four, the green waved and Miller and Marcum, the outside polesitter, bumped wheels, sending them straight into the outside retaining wall. The accident collected A.P. Ren and Farmer Smith. Ren and Marcum retired from the event, with Marcum receiving the heaviest damage. Miller tried to continue, but during a couple of warm-up laps, he elected to take scratch. That put Massillon, Ohio driver Bob Sibila on the pole with Doug McMillen alongside. When the green dropped, everyone knew that Sibila was going to be unstoppable in his Shoobie’s Lounge/R&R Auto Sales #83. Following him at the end were Doug McMillen, Bear Schwartz, Farmer Smith, and Bob Gainer. Completing the top ten were Tom Garbrandt, Greg Beule, Darrel Dexter, Bob Eichel, and Mike Miller. Miller and Garbrandt won the heats, while Smith set fast time.

The Tolloti Pipe Modified 20-lapper went off a little smoother. Mike Bowers and Jim Beatty, Jr. brought the field of Modifieds in for the green and Bowers moved out front for the first couple of circuits. The driver on the move was Mark Enos. Enos started in the fourth spot and quickly passed Tim Skinner and Beatty before working by Bowers for the lead. Glen Jewell was the next driver to move towards the front, but after getting into the second position, the veteran driver did not have quite enough to pull alongside Enos to challenge. At the finish, Enos picked up his first feature win of the season, while Jewell, John Wilson, Mark Willison, and Beatty completed the top five. The rest of the top ten were Bowers, Mel Robinson, Skinner, Rick Elkins, Jr., and Will Walker. Skinner and Robinson won the heats, while Jewell set fast time.

The Tusco Net Sport Stock feature had a rough start, as point leader Kevin McClintock and outside polesitter Kurt Waller collided on the first lap in turn three. Both cars were removed from the speedway by tow trucks. That set up the first row of Randy Smith and son, Bubba Smith who had swapped engines earlier in the week. The latter, who had won three features in a row, took the lead at the drop of the green. Shortly thereafter, Doug McMillen moved into the second spot. For a moment, it looked as though McMillen was going to run down the leader, however as the race wore on, both cars looked extremely equal, and the duo kept the same separation. At the finish, Smith crossed the line first, but in post-race teardown, the motor was found not to meet division requirements, giving Doug McMillen the Mid-Season Championship crown. Randy Smith, Don Rufener, Jr., Rich Stalnaker, and Rob Hooper completed the top five. The rest of the top ten were Roger Butler, Terry Colletti, Bill Weaver, Larry Pringle, and Joe Sanford, Jr. McMillen, driving the Dale’s Heating & Cooling/Haas Body Shop #54 also won the fast heat. Rob Hooper was victorious in the second heat, while Kurt Waller set fast time.

In the Papa John’s Pure Stock division, Bob Passwaters, Jr. and John Leasure started on the first row for the fifteen-lap race. Leasure took the lead and was looking for his first feature win of the season, as drivers diced for position behind him. Towards the end, Randy Smart, the point’s leader, had moved into the second spot, but ran out of time, as Leasure crossed the line as the winner. Following the Canton Auto Salvage/World Import Automotive #12 were Smart, Larry Smith, Greg Grove, and Rich Schweitzer. The rest of the top ten were Teddy Oliver, Scott Archer, Al Street, Bob Passwaters, Jr., and Doug Higgins. Schweitzer, Dave Fox, Jr., and Bob Passwaters, Sr. were the heat race winners, while Grove set fast time.

In the fast feature for the Compact division, John McNutt followed Russell Grandison through the pack. As the pair of teammates raced out front, Grandison slid high off of the second turn and McNutt raced by to the inside. McNutt picked up his fourth victory of the season, so his car was available to be claimed. McNutt stated on the track that he would most likely sell his car, since he had another built. However, once told of the claiming party in the pits, McNutt just could not part with his racer. That gave the win to Grandison. Following Grandison in the rundown were Tom Barrett, Jim Poole, Kyle Grewell, and Kelly McNutt. Tye Kelly, Jason Morgan, Tammy Rufener, Earl Scranton, and Bryant Smith finished off the top ten.

In the second feature, Josh Irwin claimed the win via a last lap pass, while Jesse Page, Eric Feister, Allen Andrews, and James Domer finished off the top five. The third place car of Mike Gribble was found to have heated springs, keeping him from a third place finish. The rest of the top ten were Steven Feister, Troy McMath, Billy Hilliker, Jim Miller, and Jerry Kimble.

The final Compact feature victory went to Bubba Smith. Kenny Jewell, Jason Anthony, Kenny Ford, and Steve Cooper followed Smith. Chris Smith, Mike Roth, Ryan Kopp, Bob Viertel, and Jim Keller, Jr. rounded out the top ten.

Compact preliminary wins went to Russell Grandison, Troy McMath, Eric Feister, Bubba Smith, and Joe Elerick. Kelly McNutt set fast time.

In the Dale’s Heating & Cooling Figure 8’s, Aaron Fonte, driving the J.D. Byrider #20 van, picked up the exciting victory over Thom Septer, Jason Morgan, Mike Hammerling, and Don Rufener, Jr. The vans will next be in action on Wednesday, July 28.

Racing will continue this Friday, July 2 with the Main Event Racing Series 150 for the Super Late Models. Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will also race. A gigantic fireworks display will also take place. Pits open at 2:00, practice starts at 2:30, grandstands open at 5:00, qualifying is from 5:30-7:30, and racing will start at 8:00.
