Racing for the third time in eight days, Midvale Speedway had over 100 racecars to compete in night #12 of the 2004 season. Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were on hand.
In the Tusco Net Sport Stock division, Bubba Smith, who had set fast time earlier in the night, drew the pole position pill after qualifying. Slated to start to the outside was Kevin McClintock, the point leader who got married earlier in the day. When the green dropped, McClintock challenged Smith for a lap or so, before Smith was able to take control out front. Over the rest of the 20-lapper, Smith built up a couple of sizable leads, while McClintock comfortably held on to second. At the finish, McClintock, Roger Butler, Kurt Waller, and John Tantarelli, Jr followed the Smith’s Auto Sales/JLK Hood Cleaning #12. Rob Hooper, Rich Stalnaker, Doug McMillen, Calvin Collins, and George Miller finished off the top ten. Don Rufener, Jr. and Collins won the heats.
In the Tolloti Pipe Modified 20-lapper, Mark Willison started in the second spot and took early control of the feature event. Behind him, Mark Enos and Glen Jewell were working toward the front of the field. During the last half of the race, Enos moved into second with Jewell, the top qualifier, taking third. However, over the last handful of laps, neither driver had enough to challenge Willison, so the Minerva driver picked up his fourth feature win of the season. Following the Selway Heating & Cooling #18 across the stripe were Enos, Jewell, Tim Skinner, and John Wilson. Rounding out the top ten were Mike Bowers, Jim Beatty, Jr., Mel Robinson, Ron McBride, and Keith Thomas. Skinner and Willison won the heats.
In Performance Race Fuels Late Model feature action, Rich Marcum and Tom Garbrandt started on the front row. Garbrandt used the outside lane to quickly take the lead of the 25-lap event, while Marcum settled into second. A couple of times during the race, Marcum closed the gap between himself and the leader, but in the end, Garbrandt was able to hold on for his second feature win. Marcum came home as the runner-up for the second time this season, while Darrel Dexter, Greg Beule, and top qualifier Bear Schwartz rounded out the top five. Bob Gainer, Doug McMillen, Bob Eichel, Farmer Smith, and Dan Stemple finished off the top ten. Garbrandt also picked up a heat race win.
In feature action for the Papa John’s Pure Stocks, Paul Parson and Dave Fox, Jr. brought the 21-car field in for the green. Parson took the lead, as the fast cars starting in the middle of the field diced for position on their way to the front. Teddy Oliver, Randy Smart, and Rick Elkins, Jr. all were eventually up front battling for the top spot. After a couple of lead changes, Elkins, who had set the track record earlier in the night, took over and came across the line as the victor. Randy Smart brought home second, while Oliver, Al Street, and Scott Archer followed the Redline Racing Engines/Passmore’s Roofing & Siding #53 across the line. Greg Grove, Rob Scott, Blake Mackey, Doug Higgins, and Rocky Moore completed the top ten. Grove, Scott, and Nick Cross won the heats.
In the fast feature for the Compact division, Russell Grandison and John McNutt were moving through the field, putting on a show for the fans in attendance. Grandison, able to stay ahead of McNutt as some contact sent the latter driver spinning, was able to take the lead and pick up the convincible win. Following the US Chemical & Plastics/Morton Paint #72 were Nick Grubbs, Kyle Grewell, Jim Poole, and Tye Kelly. Grubbs elected not to tear down, so that moved Tom Barrett into the official top five. The rest of the top ten were Allen Andrews, Kelly McNutt, Jason Morgan, Bryant Smith, and Adam Mishler.
In the second feature, New Philadelphia driver Josh Irwin picked up his second feature win of the year. Jesse Page came across the line in a close second, while Mike Gribble, Chris Smith, and Troy McMath finished off the top five. James Domer, Jason Garrett, Tammy Rufener, Kenny Ford, and Patrick Wade rounded out the top ten.
In the final feature, Mike Roth was victorious for the second time in feature action. Steve Cooper, Janna Shaw, Ryan Kopp, and Ben Gibson were the rest of the top five. Following them in the top ten were Jesse Crabtree, John Wissman, Jr., Jim Keller, Jr., Roger Grubbs, and Jaimie Huebner, Jr.
John McNutt, Jim Poole, Josh Irwin, Steve Cooper, and Roger Grubbs won the Compact heat races, while Jason Nealey set fast time.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday night, June 26, as the Mid-Season championships will be held with the return of the Mini-Van Figure 8’s. Admission prices will be regular, while the racing action takes its first green flag at 6:30. For more information, go to midvalespeedway.com.
