 Midvale Speedway held its second annual free grandstand admission night, this past Wednesday, June 16. 65 cars were on hand to compete in the Pure Stock and Compact divisions.
In the Papa John’s Pure Stock class, rivals Greg Grove and Teddy Oliver have been battling it out in some heated matchups over the last couple of weeks. On this night, fans waited with great anticipation to see what would happen next. Unbelievably, Oliver took the lead early in the 20-lap feature, with Grove taking second, leaving the two to duel for the top spot. As the AAA Travel/J.D. Byrider #3 of Grove went to the outside lane, Oliver’s Midas Auto Service/Waterloo Transmission #49 stayed on the bottom and ran an extremely close race for the lead. After a few laps, Grove, of Tuscarawas, Ohio, was able to take the lead, while Oliver dropped to second. Several cautions flew during the extended race, and as the checkered flag flew, Grove brought home his second feature victory of the season. Oliver, Blake Mackey, Randy Smart, and Bob Passwaters, Sr. completed the top five. The rest of the top ten were Larry Smith, Will Miller, Rich Schweitzer, Chuck Elkins, and Al Street. Grove won the dash, Bob Passwaters, Jr. and Teddy Oliver won the heats, and Mackey won the pursuit. Al Street set fast time.
In the fast feature for the Compact division, John McNutt won his third feature of the season, but his first with his new car. McNutt held off his charging nephew Kelly McNutt, as well as point leader Terry Colletti. Following McNutt at the finish were K. McNutt, Terry Colletti, Dale Beatty, and Tom Barrett. Tye Kelly, Kenny Jewell, Perry Nave, Jason Morgan, and Adam Mishler completed the top ten. After the race, the #27 of Terry Colletti was claimed by another competitor. Colletti turned down the $1,000 claim, hence losing his points for the night and the New Philadelphia driver will be unable to compete in the division for the rest of the season.
In the second feature, Bubba Smith picked up the win. Following the Canton, Ohio driver were Justin Courtney, Jesse Page, Charles Ritch, and Will Miller. Rounding out the top ten were Don Rufener, Jr., Jim Miller, Troy McMath, Mike Gribble, and Earl Scranton.
Jason Anthony won the final feature of the evening. James Domer came home second, while Barb Feister, Mickey Green, and Joe Elerick completed the top five. John Wissman, Jr. came home sixth, and was followed by Tim Thomas, Chris Smith, Chris Grubbs, and Bob Viertel.
Tom Barrett won the Compact dash. Dale Beatty, Adam Mishler, Tracy Lovell, Mike Roth, and Jason Anthony won the heats, and Kelly McNutt is credited with the pursuit win.
Jessica Smith of Canton, Ohio won the Pure Stock and Compact Powder Puff races.
