Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | May 1, 2004 |
Despite rain showers covering the state of Ohio, over 100 drivers competed a complete week #4 of the 2003 racing season. Make-up features from the April 17 rainout were held along with the regular night of features.
In the Performance Race Fuels Late Model 25-lap make-up feature, Duane Dunn and Kenny Cantrell made up the first row, as each looked for their first feature win of the season. Dunn pulled into the early lead, but pulled high and pitside with two laps in. That handed the lead to Kenny Cantrell, who was looking for his first career Late Model win. Cantrell pulled to a decent lead, but top qualifier Farmer Smith ran him down with half the race complete. Cantrell pushed high in the second corner and Smith raced by and into victory lane, moments after Smith caught the leader. Following Smith in his Dover-Phila Federal Credit Union/J.D. Byrider #7 were Cantrell, Tom Garbrandt, Bear Schwartz, and Darrel Dexter. Kenny Stevens, Doug McMillen, and Duane Dunn completed the field.
In the Tolloti Pipe Modified 20-lap make-up race, Randy Gray and Dave Watson brought the strong field in for the green. Lap-after-lap, the duo ran double wide for the lead, with Watson challenging hard in the outside lane. A couple of times, it looked as though Watson would close the door, but Gray came back each time. The duo literally ran side-by-side for the lead until two laps to go when Watson slid sideways, fell back a few spots, and retired to the pits. Gray, driving the Gray’s Welding & Fabricating/Twin City Automotive #27 held off a late challenge from Mark Willison for his first victory in 2004. Following Gray and Willison were Glen Jewell, Ron McBride, and Jeff Smith. John Wilson, Jim McCune, Mike Bowers, Dave Watson, and Keith Thomas.
Doug McMillen used his outside pole starting spot to take the early lead in the Tusco Net Sport Stock feature event. While pole-sitter Greg Mazzoleni ran second, McMillen continued stretching his lead. Around the halfway mark, Will Walker took the second spot from Mazzoleni, as Bill Aubihl’s car brought out a caution for fire. Over the final half of the race, McMillen held off Walker, Joe Linard, Kevin McClintock, and Mazzoleni. Also following the Dale’s Heating & Cooling/Haas Body Shop #54 in the top ten were Don Rufener, Jr., Roger Linard, Roger Butler, Gabe Pringle, and Kurt Waller.
Up next was the Papa John’s Pure Stock 15-lap make-up race. Larry Smith and Blake Mackey started on the front row, with Mackey taking the lead after the first couple of laps. On the first restart, Mackey had Rich Schweitzer on his rear bumper, and the latter was nearly able to get by for the top spot, as Mackey slid sideways. However, the third year Pure Stock competitor pulled away at the end, and picked up his second career feature win in the Tusco Net/Dover Tank & Plate #7. Schweitzer, Randy Smart, Greg Grove, and Doug Decker completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Rick Elkins, Jr., Al Street, John Leasure, Teddy Oliver, and Chris Miller.
Completing the make-up races, were three Compact features. In the fast car feature, Kelly McNutt started on the outside of row two and moved into the top spot with two laps in. At that point, it looked like and easy victory for McNutt as the 2003 track champion pulled away. However, with a couple of laps to go, Terry Colletti, the night’s top qualifier, caught him despite what looked to be an insurmountable lead. On the last lap, Colletti went low on the backstretch and nearly took the victory away. Picking up his first feature win of 2004 was the DA Construction/KM Cages #36 of Kelly McNutt. Colletti, Josh Grove, Jack Grove, and Bubba Smith finished off the top five. The rest of the top ten were Randy Hahn, Willie Grove, John McNutt, Jason Grewell, and Kenny Jewell.
Eric Anderson, Steven Feister, and Charles Ritch all led the second Compact feature, but none were victorious as Russell Grandison picked his way through the field for the feature win. Ritch, Jason Morgan, Feister, and Josh Irwin followed the U.S. Chemical & Plastics/Morton Paint #72. Eric Feister, Lennie Orr, Tammy Rufener, Anderson, and Bryant Smith finished off the top ten.
In the final make-up feature of the evening, a severe crash eliminated cars driven by John Wissman, Nick Grubbs, and Paul Stull, but all drivers were okay. Kenny Ford picked up the win, while Earl Scranton, Jason Anthony, Cody Shuss, and Kenny Griffith completed the top five.
Starting the second round of features was the Performance Race Fuels Late Models. Doug McMillen, who had won two of the three features until that point, started on the pole, with A.P. Ren alongside. Ren, making his first start of the season, pulled into the lead. With three laps in, Duane Dunn, while racing in the outside lane, and Kenny Cantrell while running the inside, had some slight contact in the middle of the frontstretch. As the cars wiggled, they collected the car of Tom Garbrandt, which went uncontrollably into the wall. Garbrandt retired with severe damage. The rest of the race was exciting, as Farmer Smith was mired deep in the field after being top qualifier. Smith, who won the first feature of the night was trying to go two-for-two, but had five cars to pass. First he went by Darrel Dexter on the outside, then the veteran driver worked by Bear Schwartz, Cantrell, and McMillen to move into second. With two laps to go, a caution came out, putting Smith on the rear bumper of Ren. As the green dropped, Smith went to the outside and nearly pulled off an improbable victory, but was edged by a fender. Ren picked up his first win in his first feature start of the season. Smith, Dexter, Cantrell, and Kenny Stevens completed the top five. The rest of the top ten were Doug McMillen, Larry Baldwin, Schwartz, Dan Stemple, and Dunn. Smith was the night’s top qualifier.
Randy Gray again started on the pole position, as he looked for a clean sweep of the night’s Modified features. Gray pulled into the lead in the early going, but Mark Willison and Ron McBride were on the move. Willison worked by Jeff Smith for the second spot in the outside lane, as the cars closed in on the halfway point. Within a lap, the Minerva driver had also worked into the lead, relegating Gray to second. Willison, crossed the line first, in the race that went flag-to-flag, to pick up the victory. Following the Selway Heating & Cooling car were McBride, Gray, Smith, and Dave Watson. Glen Jewell, John Wilson, Keith Thomas, Mike Bowers, and Mark Enos finished off the top ten. McBride set fast time.
Dover, Ohio driver Joe Linard started on the pole and ran away with the Tusco Net Sport Stock feature win. Will Walker, who started in second, never mounted a serious challenge, but ended up finishing in the runner-up position for the second time that night. Following the Adelphia TV-2 powered by Tarulli/Stix & Stones Landscaping #5 were Walker, Kurt Waller, Bubba Smith, and Kevin McClintock. Doug McMillen, Gabe Pringle, Roger Linard, Don Rufener, Jr., and Greg Mazzoleni finished off the top ten. McClintock set fast time for the fourth time in four weeks.
Tim Postel and Justin Lawson brought the 20-car Papa John’s Pure Stock field in for a green. Postel led for many laps, but Rick Elkins, Jr. and Doug Decker were able to move by late in the race. Elkins crossed the line first with Decker and Postel in tow, but all three were disqualified in post race inspections. That handed the win to Randy Smart, while Rich Schweitzer, Blake Mackey, Chris Miller, and Al Street finished off the top five. Completing the top ten were Doug Higgins, Rob Scott, Justin Lawson, Bob Passwaters, Jr., and Bob Passwaters, Sr. Rich Schweitzer ended up fast qualifier.
Terry Colletti continued his hot streak as he reached victory lane for the second time in four feature starts, while his other finishes are two seconds. Josh Grove, Jason Morgan, Kelly McNutt, and Willie Grove followed the Stonecreek Bar & Grill/Russ Moore & Sons Concrete #27. Finishing off the top ten were John McNutt, Randy Hahn, Adam Mishler, Charles Ritch, and Bubba Smith.
In the second feature, Earl Scranton picked up the win, while Josh Irwin, Russell Grandison, Lennie Orr, and Kenny Jewell completed the top five. Dougie Cross, Tammy Rufener, Steven Feister, Eric Anderson, and Jim Miller were the rest of the top ten finishers.
And in the final Compact feature, Kenny Ford made it two-for-two with the clean sweep of the third features. Kenny Griffith, Dale Beatty, Bruce Gibson, and Mike Gribble rounded out the top five.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday, May 8, with the Jayne’s Crafts/Goodyear Tires Mother’s Day Weekend Special. Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will all be on hand, while mothers in attendance will receive a special gift for Mother’s Day. Qualifying starts at 4:00, while racing will begin at 6:30.
