Eighty-six cars, in three divisions of racing, were at Midvale Speedway to compete in an added night on the 2003-schedule. Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were on hand to race dashes, heats, pursuits, and features.
Dan Gasser and Jimmy Orr started up front for the 20-lap Tusco Net Pro Stock feature event. Will Walker, who won his first career feature last week, started deep in the starting grid this week, in the tenth starting spot. For Walker to win, he had to pass a strong field of cars, including John Tantarelli, Jr., Kurt Waller, Doug McMillen, Bill Aubihl, and a host of others. Gasser led early, but Bill Hilliker took over looking for his first feature win of the season. Shortly after, Walker moved into the runner-up spot and started to rundown the leader. Hilliker, protecting the low lane, convinced Walker to move outside, and the duo ran side-by-side until Walker was able to complete his march to the front and stay ahead of Hilliker until the end. Following the Haas Body Shop #15 of Walker were Hilliker, McMillen, the track champion Tim Skinner, and Kevin McClintock who made a late race charge. Completing the top ten were Waller, Aubihl, Tantarelli, Gasser, and Travis Devore. McMillen won the dash, Devore and Lee McCreery the heats, Hilliker the pursuit, while McClintock set fast time.
Twenty-two cars lined up, for what turned out to be, an exciting Papa John’s Pure Stock feature event. John Leasure and Barney Gerber started on the front row for the 15-lapper, and Leasure took the early lead. Meanwhile, Bubba Smith, last week’s winner, and Teddy Oliver were moving through the field in a hurry. Once out front, Leasure, Smith, and Oliver all battled for the number one spot. When Leasure fell out of the top spot, he spun on the back stretch, then spun again in turn four. However, luck would go his way when a yellow came out for another spin, giving him the second spot back. That made the restart line-up Smith, Leasure, and Oliver. With just a few to go, Oliver got by Leasure and moved around Smith as well, to go on to his second win in three weeks. Following the Midas Auto Service/Waterloo Transmission #49 were Smith, Leasure, Chris Mick, and Rick Elkins, Jr. Al Street, Brian Oliver, Rich Schweitzer, Chris Miller, and Paul Parson completed the top ten. Adam Stewart won the fast dash, B. Oliver, Leasure, and Bob Passwaters, Jr. the heats, and T. Oliver the pursuit. Al Street set the official fast time.
Jason Morgan and Terry Colletti started up front in the 15-lap Compact fast feature. Colletti moved into the lead, as Morgan slipped back, and Greg Grove raced through the field. Grove, who was looking for his fourth feature win of the season, was running strong, but was also running out of time. As the cars entered turn three, on the final lap, Grove’s right rear wheel came off, sending his passenger side slamming to the pavement. Nearly rolling over, Grove’s car came to a rest, and Colletti crossed the line as the race winner. Following the Russ Moore & Sons Concrete/Stonecreek Bar & Grill entry were Kelly McNutt, John McNutt, Josh Grove, and Jason Grewell. Jim Poole, Dale Beatty, Jamie Leslie, Jason Morgan, and Rich Fox completed the top ten. Jack Grove put on a nice display of driving by winning the “follow the leader” Compact dash race, where he went to the small oval about ½ of the laps and the big oval the other half. Grove also won the fast heat, while other heat winners were Morgan, Don Rufener, Jr., Josh Irwin, and Kenny Ford. Jamie Leslie won the pursuit, while Kelly McNutt set fast time.
In the second Compact feature, Will Miller was victorious. Dave Knight, Tom Barrett, Don Rufener, Jr., and Eric Feister completed the top five, while Mickey Green, Kyle Grewell, Kevin Rector, Josh Irwin, and Larry Pringle finished off the top ten.
Eric Sell was victorious in the third and final Compact feature, as he was able to finish ahead in a race that saw many cautions, considering they only run fifteen laps. Jack Grove came home second while filling in for Paul Stull. Earl Scranton, Kenny Ford, and Jesse Page completed the top five.
The race for September 20th has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts, so the next race will be the big two-day Budweiser Fall Classic on the 27th and 28th of September. Late Models will run a 50-lapper for $1,500 to win, Modifieds a 40-lapper for $1,000 to win, Pro Stocks a 35-lapper for $400 to win, Pure Stocks a 25-lapper for $150 to win and the Compacts will run more than one feature for trophies. The Legend car series will also be on hand and will run 30-laps for $400 to win and $50 to start. On Saturday the 27th, Qualifying will start at 2:30, while racing will start at 6:30. Fast Dashes, Heats, and Dash of Champions races will take place. On Sunday, the 28th, Racing will start at 2:30. Last chance races and features will be run.
