Over 110 cars competed, on what turned out to be a very rough night, at Midvale Speedway. Late Models, Modifieds, Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were on hand to compete in regularly scheduled heats and feature events.
The first feature on the track was the 25-lap Late Model feature. Greg Beule and Tom Newman, Jr. brought the field in for the the green, and by turn one, Beule was out in front. With one lap complete, Ryan Tedesco looked like the driver to beat, as he took advantage of the outside lane and was working on Newman, who was pinned behind Beule. However, a Tom Garbrandt yellow on the second circuit wiped out his run, as he had to line up behind Newman on the restart. Immediately, once the green dropped, Newman went to the outside of Beule. After a three lap battle, the Akron driver was able to clear the leader on the backstretch to go out front. A second place run by Beule was thwarted on a lap 19 restart when Tedesco go to the inside and passed him going into three. Beule then spun and had to restart at the back of the field. Even with the car of Tedesco on the rear bumper of Newman for the last couple of restarts, Newman was able to run away with the night’s feature win, his third of the season. Following the HY NRG Promotions/Performance Metal Works #10 were Tedesco, Bear Schwartz, Tom Garbrandt, and Mike Enos. John Miller, Keith Thomas, Duane Dunn, Beule, and Bob Eichel completed the top ten. Dunn won the heat, while Schwartz set fast time in qualifying when the top five cars turned times in the 14.70 bracket.
A better, but still small, field of Tolloti Pipe Modifieds were on hand to compete in the 20-lap feature event. Lawney Vaughn, filling in for Mark Willison, and Randy Gray made up the front row in the night’s starting line-up. By turn one, the outside lane led by Gray had gone to the front. Shortly thereafter, rookie Ron McBride took second, looking for his career best finish. After the first couple of laps, the field singled out and Gray and McBride pulled away for their best finishes of the season. Following the Uhrichsville driver’s Trenton Service/Gray’s Welding & Fabricating #27 were McBride, Vaughn, John Wilson, and Dusty Woodie. Glen Jewell, Mark Enos, Mark Striker, Jeff Smith, and Shawn Nastasi completed the top ten. Vaughn won the heat, while the fast time setter was Striker.
Bill Aubihl, back in action for the first time in several weeks, and Jamie Warner, competing in only his second night of action this season, made up the first row for the 20-lap Tusco Net Pro Stock feature. With Warner out front, Aubihl second, and Don Rufener, Jr. third, the car on a march to the front was that of Doug McMillen. With just a couple of laps to go, McMillen was able to work by the outside of Warner for the lead and eventually the feature win. Following the Uhrichsville driver’s Haas Body Shop/Advance Auto Parts #54 were Warner, John Tantarelli, Jr., Aubihl, and Will Walker. Rufener, Jimmy Orr, Gabe Pringle, Kevin McClintock, and Tim Skinner completed the top ten. McMillen and Paul Murray won the heats, while Skinner set fast time.
Brian Wood and D.J. Radanovich led the Papa John’s Pure Stocks in for the green flag, and Radanovich wasted little time in taking the lead and running away. Exciting side-by-side battles took place throughout the field during the race, but no one was really ever able to pick up that many spots except the #49 of Teddy Oliver who moved from back in the field to third. At the finish, it was the Waterloo Transmission/V-Rock Shop #75 of Massillon, Ohio driver D.J. Radanovich picking up his second feature win, with Bryce Scott second, Oliver third, Bubba Smith fourth, and Tom Feller, Jr. fifth. Rich Schweitzer, John Leasure, Justin Courtney, Brian Wood, and Al Street rounded out the top ten. Courtney, Radanovich, and Douglas Higgins won the heats, while T. Oliver set fast time.
In the fireproofcar.com Compact fast feature, second fast qualifier Randy Smart maneuvered his rocket ship through the field, despite blowing his motor the night before. Luckily for the point leader, fellow competitor Gary Musick had and extra one, and it helped Smart not miss a beat. Following the Valley Rentals/Diamond Window Tinting #6 were Russell Grandison, Dale Beatty, John McNutt, and Kelly McNutt. Greg Grove, Josh Grove, Terry Colletti, John Nealey, and Rich Fox completed the top ten.
In the second feature, Tom Barrett picked up the convincing win in his East High Arby’s/Musick & Son Heating & Cooling #157. Bob Passwaters, Jr., Bruce Gibson, Josh Irwin, and Will Miller completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Phil Wade, Ray Hoover, Bob Passwaters, Sr., Ron Myers, and Tye Kelly.
In the third and final feature, John Wissman picked up the victory. Kyle Grewell, Jeff Lanzer, Brian Thompson, and Eric Sell finished off the top five. Completing the top ten were Dan Gray, Kenny Jewell, Charles Ritch, Ben Gibson, and Jaimie Huebner.
Winning Compact preliminaries were Smart, Fox, Bruce Gibson, Jewell, and Thompson. The top qualifier was Kelly McNutt.
