Over 130 cars were in the pits for camera and autograph night at Midvale Speedway. Late Models, Modifieds, Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were all on hand to compete.
Mike Enos and Duane Dunn made up the first row for the 25-lap Late Model feature. Dunn quickly moved out front, but Enos looked quicker and actually looked to the inside during the first couple of circuits. With Bear Schwartz in tow, Dunn worked lap-after-lap to stay in front as his car was extremely loose coming off of the speedway’s turns. One of the quickest cars in the field was that of point’s leader Mike Miller. For the second week in a row, Miller’s #53 car was strong in the outside lane as he put on a good show for the fans. After a many lap battle, Miller was able to take fourth away from A.P. Ren. Somehow, despite the ill-handling car, Dunn was able to cross the line at the end for his second victory of 2003. Enos, Schwartz, Miller, and Ren followed the Renner And Daughter Concrete/Swan Racing Fabrication #32 across the stripe. Rounding out the top ten were Tom Garbrandt, Tom Newman, Jr., Greg Beule, Farmer Smith, Todd Ripley. Miller and Ripley won the heats, while Smith set fast time in qualifications.
Jeff Smith, the outside polesitter of the Tolloti Pipe Modifed 20-lapper, moved around Jim McCune for the race lead on the first lap. By lap three, Smith was pulling away, as John Wilson was moving into second. With the outside lane moving up, Mark Enos moved around McCune for third and Mark Willison took fourth. Caution flew, as Smith was pulling away, due to going under his qualifying time on lap 7. Smith went to the tail, and later worked himself back up to a respectable finishing position. Up front, Wilson was the new leader with Enos looking to the inside each time Wilson ran high. After the race’s third caution, Wilson slid a bit too high on the backstretch, allowing Enos to move by for the lead going into turn three. Enos went on to his second win of the season in the Generall Construction/Abram’s Head Service #0, with Willison, Mark Striker, Dusty Woodie, and Glen Jewell in the rest of the top five. Ron McBride, Jeff Smith, Butch Erickson, John Wilson, and Jim McCune completed the top ten. Willison and Shawn Nastasi won the heats, while Jewell set fast time.
The most exciting race of the night was again the Tusco Net Pro Stock 20 lapper. Roger Butler and Kurt Waller made up the first row with the duo battling in the first couple of circuits. With a handful of laps in, Butler gave up the lead, as his #00 started to lose power. Waller, a rookie looking for his second feature win, took the top spot with Kevin McClintock quickly moving into the second spot. After a caution, McClintock immediately moved to the outside lane, and looked like he was going to have enough to pick up his first victory of the season. However, as the race wore down, Waller was able to edge ahead. The worst wreck of the night took place during the white flag lap when Gabe Pringle and Doug McMillen slammed the wall in turn two. It turned out to be a bad break for both, as they looked to have top five finishes wrapped up. At the finish, Waller was able to hang on in his KR Sulzener Construction/Hoop Design Graphics #18, while McClintock, Tim Skinner, John Tantarelli, Jr., and Joe Linard completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Keith Thomas, Dan Gasser, Sonny Arkenburgh, Bryan Aubihl, and Greg Mazzoleni. Mazzoleni and Gasser won the heats, while Skinner had the fastest lap.
Mike Martin and Norm Stutler made up the first row for the 15-lap Papa John’s Pure Stock feature, and Stutler took the lead before the race’s first caution with point’s leader Joe Oliver racing to the outside as well. After the race’s second caution, John Leasure moved into third, second, and first respectively in a handful of laps, with the toughest challenge being Norm Stutler. Joe Oliver raced into second, with Adam Mackey third, Justin Courtney fourth, and Mike Martin in fifth. D.J. Radanovich, Al Street, Brian Wood, Tom Feller, Jr., and Adam Stewart completed the top ten. It was the first win of the season for the Canton Auto Salvage/World Import Automotive #3.
In the second feature, Douglas Higgins worked his way to the front and passed Chuck Sampson for the lead and the feature victory. It was the first feature victory for the Eadie’s PDQ/Canton Rugby #13. Sampson finished second with Vic Paul, Paul Parson, and Chris Miller completing the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Ron Myers, Dick Aubihl, Shawanna Myers, Ray Van Lehn, and Scott McRobie. Bubba Smith, Norm Stutler, and Ron Myers won the heats, while Teddy Oliver set fast time.
Jason Grewell and Jason Morgan brought the 17-car field in for the 15-lap fast Compact feature. Morgan took the lead as the duo came in for the completion of lap one. With about five laps in, Cody Kahler put his car in the outside lane and eventually worked his way around Morgan for the top spot. Kahler then ran away with the victory, his second in a row, driving the Bob’s Towing/J&T Auto Body #96. Terry Colletti came home second with Randy Smart, Greg Grove, and Jason Morgan completing the top five. Rounding out the top ten were John McNutt, Kelly McNutt, Josh Grove, David Breehl, and Randy Hahn.
Jack Grove drove his way to the front in the second Compact feature, for his first feature victory of 2003. Will Miller, Jim Poole, Jr., Rocky Moore, and Eric Feister rounded out the top five, while Bob Passwaters, Jr., Jeff Lanzer, Kevin Rennicker, Tye Kelly, and Adam Mishler finished off the top ten.
In the third Compact feature, Jim Keller, Jr. picked up the victory, as he crossed the stripe ahead of Lennie Orr, John Baker, Jamie Leslie, and Kyle Grewell. Dale Beatty, Kenny Ford, Jack Thomas, Jason Anthony, and Gary Murray rounded out the top ten. Jason Morgan, Russell Grandison, Tye Kelly, Dale Beatty, and Jamie Leslie won heats, while Kelly McNutt set fast time.
