Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| July 4, 2003 |
A grand total of over 130 cars were in the pits, with 18 of those being very strong Super Late Models for the 4th of July special at Midvale Speedway.
In Main Event Racing Series qualifications, fifteen cars were able to qualify before a heavy storm hit the speedway, delaying the rest of qualifying for about an hour and a half. Doylestown, Ohio driver Gary Whipkey set fast time with a 13.71, while Tim Ice (13.88), John Crumrine (13.96), Marcus Malcuit (13.98), and Dino Long (14.00) rounded out the top five.
After time trials, the largest pill (8) was drawn, putting Michael Simko on the pole with A.P. Ren alongside. On the start, Simko immediately took the lead, as Ren fell back on the outside groove. However, the start was negated as Crumrine and Ice made contact, followed by a spin that brought out the yellow flag.
The second try was also a “no go” as Mike Miller and Gary Whipkey brought out the yellow in turn four.
The third time was a charm, though, and Simko again had a start that put him out front with the outside polesitter, Ren falling back to sixth. The field ran two laps without problem before Jeremie Wiggins had something break under the rear end of his car bringing out the third caution.
Under green flag racing, Ryan Tedesco, Midvale’s 2002 Late Model track champion, worked on the lowside of the speedway trying to get a good run at Simko for the top spot. The time to make his move finally came on a lap seven restart. As Simko brought the field in for the green, he ran an unusual line off of turn four, one that ended up costing him three spots as Tedesco took the lead and Ice and Crumrine also moved by to move into the top three.
With one-tenth of the race complete, Ice, who won both 2002 events at Midvale, started to hound Tedesco for the race lead. After several laps, the handling on Ice’s car really started to fade, and the veteran driver fell back through the field before retiring late in the race.
When Ice fell out of contention, Akron, Ohio driver John Crumrine picked up the slack and ran nose-to-tail with the leader for many laps, before his car’s rear-end gave out, costing him a chance at victory.
The final contender for the win was Strasburg, Ohio driver Marcus Malcuit, who for the first time on the series this year, was able to avoid bad luck and he ran strong at his home track. However, when the checkered fell on the event, Ryan Tedesco, driving the Marathon Manufacturing/Hog Heaven #70 was victorious with Malcuit, Ren, Whipkey, and Dino Long completing the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Rich Rohrer, John Vallo, Joel McKnight, Rob Patrick, and Don Mahaffey, Jr.
For Tedesco, the win was his second career MERS victory. The other win came two years ago at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway.
The next event will be held at the Dixie Motor Speedway in Birch Run, MI on Friday, July 18.
In other action at the speedway, the Tusco Net Pro Stocks put on the most exciting race of the night, in their 20-lap feature event. Lap-after-lap Calvin Collins was able to hold off a strong field of challengers as he looked for an upset feature win. With about two to go, Don Rufener, Jr., who was the previous week’s surprise winner, looked like he was on his way to win #2 of the season, but when the white flag flew the duo slid high allowing Doug McMillen, in his Dale’s Heating & Cooling/Packer’s Garage #54, to make it a three wide battle for the lead. McMillen shot into the lead as top qualifier, Tim Skinner, followed. At the finish, McMillen picked up the feature win followed by Skinner, Collins, Rufener, and Roger Butler. Keith Thomas, John Tantarelli, Jr., Roger Linard, Jimmy Orr, and Kevin McClintock rounded out the top ten.
In Tolloti Pipe Modified action, Dusty Woodie had a strong car for the second week in a row, as he worked his way through the field and out front to pull away for the convincing victory. Glen Jewell, who was able to hold of point’s leader Mark Striker, came home second, with Striker third, Ron McBride fourth, and John Wilson rounding out the top five. The rest of the top ten were first time Midvale competitor Matt Marlowe, Baldy Baker, Jr., Shawn Nastasi, Mark Enos, and Joe Shannon. Roma’s Gift Gallery and Coshocton Trucking sponsor Woodie’s #44.
Curtis Collins started up front and never looked back in the 15-lap Papa John’s Pure Stock fast feature. John Leasure, Brian Wood, Joe Oliver, and Justin Courtney completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Rich Schweitzer, Teddy Oliver, Larry Smith, D.J. Radanovich, and Bubba Smith.
Adam Stewart picked up the win in the second feature. Tom Feller, Jr., Norm Stutler, Douglas Higgins, and Chris Miller followed the Canton, Ohio driver across the line. Paul Parson, Dick Aubihl, Rick Hoffman, Ray Van Lehn, and Chuck Sampson finished in the top ten.
In the fireproofcar.com Compact division, Terry McNutt started up front and was looking for his first career win. McNutt, who was also celebrating his birthday, was able to get his wish by holding off Josh Grove and Randy Smart at the end. Smart came home second, while Grove, John McNutt, and Jason Morgan completed the top ten. Kelly McNutt, Terry Colletti, John Nealey, Gary Musick, and Randy Hahn completed the top ten.
In the second feature, Bob Passwaters, Sr. picked up his second win of the year by holding off Bo Hayes, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Rocky Moore, and Tom Barrett. Ray Hoover, Tye Kelly, Jim Poole, Otto Polilli, and Luke Crawshaw rounded out the top ten.
Phil Wade won the third feature event, with Kyle Grewell, Jim Miller, Jason Anthony, and Gary Murray second through fifth. The rest of the top ten were Ben Gibson, Steven Feister, Jaimie Huebner, Joe Fewkes, and Timothy Everhart.
Racing action will continue this coming Saturday, July 12, as all five divisions will compete. Also, don’t forget the cameras and signing materials as Camera and Autograph night will take place at intermission. Racing starts at 6:30.
