Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| June 3, 2017 |
It was a picture perfect early June evening as Skipco Auto Auction presented the Super Cup Stock Car Series Twin 50's and our five regular racing Divisions. Ninety cars and trucks made the trip to the 3/10 mile oval. It was sunny and 75 degrees at race time.
The Super Cup Stock Car Series is in its 10th anniversary season and they made their seventh visit to Midvale Speedway. In the past, they have either raced a 100 lap or a 75 lap feature. This year the series decided to do twin 50 lapper's. This year's top qualifier was the the winner from 2015, Larry Berg in the #7.
The first 50 lap feature had the the #63 of Jim Crabtree Jr and the #99 of Jon Kerley leading the field down for the start. Crabtree, making his 1st start in the series since 2013, took the race lead. Kerley, making his series debut, slotted into the second position with defending race winner Brent Nelson in the #80 running 3rd. Larry Berg in the #7 was able to make the inside pass on Nelson to move to 3rd on lap 5. In 2015, Berg swept the program by winning the pole, leading at halfway and taking the victory. Coming off turn four on lap 5, the second place machine of Kerley lost power, slowed and bottled up the inside line. The caution waved on lap 6 as the Kerley machine finally came to rest on the back straightaway. After the green flew once again, Crabtree maintained the lead with Berg climbing to 2nd, Nelson 3rd and the #51 of Harvey Harrison running 4th. At the 1/5th mark, Berg was able to make the pass and take over the lead. The car on the move was the #71 of Trent Gossar, who was on the march from his 9th starting position and was now in the top 3 by lap 14. The second caution came out on lap 16 for debris in turn two and that's when things started jumbling up. The Gossar ride was sent pit side for a possible oil leak after trailing smoke for several laps prior to the caution, but would return. It seemed like every time we thought we could get some laps in, the caution waved. Berg, Crabtree Jr and Harrison battled for the lead, but we're slowed several times. That allowed Gossar to climb back into contention. The car was still trailing smoke but there was also smoke coming from under the helmet. Sometimes when you are mad, it makes you focus and be more aggressive trying to gain back what you feel you deserve. Thats exactly what Gossar did. On the final restart on lap 37, Gossar packed his machine deep into turn three and took the lead away from Crabtree. Those two would distance themselves from the rest of the field and Gossar, who was the 2016 Series Rookie of The Year, would pick up his first career win. Following the Markleville IN driver in the Gossar's Towing and Don Gnat Racing Chevrolet was Crabtree, Berg, Harrison and JP Crabtree.
The second 50 lapper had the #5 of Brandon Harrison and the #51 of Harvey Harrison on the front row after the re-draw. Brandon was able to take the early lead with the strong top two duo from the first 50, Jim Crabtree Jr in the #63 and Trent Gossar in the #71 moving up quickly. Another car that was on the move was the #7, only for the second 50, it had a new driver behind the wheel. Stephen Cox, who's #21 machine broke in the first 50, was asked to step into the car that finished 3rd earlier and won the pole. Cox was severely burned in a nasty crash back in Feb of 2016. He made his return to racing last June here at Midvale with a Pole and runner-up finish in an inspirational drive. On lap 7, Crabtree and Gossar were able to make their way around the Harrison's and into the top 2 spots. Gossar again, started to show smoke out the back of his machine and it was getting worse. Despite the smoke, his car was running flawlessly, as he took over the top spot on lap 12. That's when the jumble effect took place once again. The caution flew on lap 13 as the Harrison's got together in turn two with Brandon calling it a day. Gossar was forced to park his ride, from the lead, for a worsening oil leak. After that and a handful of cautions, the players for the final stretch run were the #63 of Crabtree, the #77 of 2 time Midvale winner Kevin Kromer, the #7 of Cox and the #99 of Jon Kerley. After a lengthy cleanup for antifreeze (which is a HUGE no-no) and oil, the final restart green flag waved on lap 18. Crabtree was the leader Kerley, who restarted 2nd would fade as Cox moved to second. Kromer would be left to battle with JP Crabtree and Harvey Harrison because the front two checked out. As the laps clicked away, it looked as if Crabtree was going to finally become a bride at Midvale after three second place finishes. But, with 8 laps to go, Cox wanted to write his own storybook ending. Cox would get around Crabtree with an inside pass to pick up his 1st career victory at the track he made his return to racing at a year ago. Following the Indianapolis IN driver in the Grant Country Mulch Inc. Chevrolet into an emotional victory lane was Crabtree Jr (for the 4th time finishing 2nd at Midvale), JP Crabtree, Kromer and Harvey Harrison.
The first feature of the night was the Finish Line Motor's Mini Truck 15 lapper. Michael Varnes in the #95 and Rich Schweitzer in the #84 started up front. Varnes led lap 1, Schweitzer led lap 2 and the caution led lap 3. The lone caution was for contact between Varnes and Andrew Fishburn in the #87 in turn one. Fishburn was sent to the tail. Back under green and there was a new player up front, it was Barney Gerber in the #2T. After an accident in the pit area a few weeks back that cost him parts of a couple fingers, Gerber was back behind the wheel and not missing a beat. Gerber was able to increase his lead with Schweitzer battling with Colt Locker in the #118 for 2nd. Locker tried and tried to the outside but the truck was just too loose and wouldn't grip coming off the corner. Schweitzer would hang on to 2nd as Gerber cruised to his first win in some 11 years. Following the RV Parts Express, Swiss Auto Mart and Hottwired Band sponsored #2T was Schweitzer, Locker, Varnes, Fishburn and Tim Frederick.
Bob Schneider Jr in the #17 and Mack Gribble in the #45 brought the field to Chief Starter Terry Colletti's green flag. Schneider was able to clear Gribble, which allowed the #42 of Tom Stankiewicz to pull up into second. Bubba Smith in the #12, Alex Rosenberry in the #2 and Ryan Tedesco in the #710 were able to get around Gribble on lap 4. Gribble would get sideways and spin off turn four, collecting the #3 of Dave Martin to bring out the 1st caution on lap 5. After a two lap battle on the restart, Stankiewicz was able to take the top spot away and Rosenberry shot up to second. On lap 9, Rosenberry disposed of Stankiewicz and the rest of the field. The #2 was bolted, on rails, whatever phrase you want to insert. The final caution flew on lap 18 as the #1 of Bryant Smith was caught up by a lapped machine and spun to the infield and out of the event. After the restart, Rosenberry was off and again out to a descent lead as Tedesco and Smith were not able to do anything with Stankiewicz. They needed a 3rd caution that never came and I'm not sure on this night, it would have mattered. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the Rosenberry Towing, DLP Commercial Maintenance, Flite Test and McIntosh Oil Company sponsored #2 was Stankiewicz, Bubba, Tedesco and Schneider Jr.
The South Philly Pizza Compact fast feature was up next with last week's feature winner Brandon France in the #38 and the #7 of Travis Riddle starting up front. France took the lead as last year's Champion Britt Vanmeter in the #27 took second. On lap 3, Vanmeter was able to make the inside pass for the lead, but France made a nice crossover move in turn one to get back to the inside of Vanmeter. Those two would battle back and forth, swapping the lead for several laps until the caution flew on lap 6 for a three car pileup in turn one. On the initial restart, Noah Patterson in the #8 and Dan Buckey in the #69 got together, resulting in Buckey being sent to the tail. Vanmeter would shoot out to the lead but the car on the move was fastest qualifier Clayton Oliver in the #19. Oliver would sit patiently behind Vanmeter, waiting for an opportunity as Jeffery Orr in the #36 and France battled for 3rd. Finally, on lap 12, Oliver got the opening he was waiting for. He capitalized as Vanmeter slipped a little bit in turn one, allowing Oliver to get to the inside. The rest was history. Oliver would pull away to his second win of the season. Following the Minerva OH driver in the Vegas Nights, Crislip Motorsports, TJ's Automotive, Finish Line Designs and Deluxe Body Shop sponsored #19 was Vanmeter, France, Orr and Kyle Finlayson.
Next up was the Summit Racing Economy Modified 25 lap feature. Cristian Bailey in the #37 and Bill Shimko in the #13 led the field to the line. Bailey was able to take the top spot early on as Mike Bowers in the #02 pulled up into second and Shimko in third. Bowers was able to get a good run off turn two to get to the inside of Bailey and take over the point. Shortly after, Shimko was able to take over second and "The Rooster" Brandon Bailey in the #55 pulled up to third. The first caution flew on lap 7 as Lee McCreery in the #2 cut a right front tire. After the restart, Bowers continued to lead until Rooster moved to 2nd and then to the lead. On lap 14 fastest qualifier Lucas Ripley got into Shimko off turn two and on the next restart, Shimko got bottled up by the #10 of Shawn Kaufman, causing the races final caution on lap 15. "Big Mac" Doug McMillen had worked his way to second and was on the outside of Rooster for the final restart. After a lap battle, Rooster took control and would put his #55 back in Finish Line Motor's Victory Lane for the second time this season. Rounding out the top 5 behind the Leesville OH driver in the Scio Car Wash, Vaughan's Pub & Grille and Dover Hydraulics sponsored #55 was McMillen, Todd Ripley, Kevin McClintock and Bowers.
After the second Twin 50 was the JD Byrider Street Stock 20 lapper. Kenny Feister in the #13 and Bob Passwaters Sr in the #75 led the field down for the start. Passwaters quickly worked out front and the #22 of Kyle Rector moved to second on the outside. Rector, moving up from the compact division after several wins over the past few years, was looking good in his first race. Then, off turn four on lap 3, Rector got loose, overcorrected and hit the front straightaway wall hard. The #77 of Josh Moss and Feister were involved with hard hits themselves as well as several others receiving damage. All drivers were ok but Moss, Feister and Rector were unable to continue. After the clean-up, Passwaters Sr again took control for a lap until Mike Martin in the #11 arrived on the scene. Martin, a former Pure Stock Champion, was able to take the top spot away after a nifty inside pass off turn four. Colton Ritchey in the #21 was able to move up on the rear decklid of the #11, looking for a way around. Ritchey continuously tried high, he tried low but Martin never put a wheel wrong. Gabe Pringle in the #7 was charging hard and running down the leaders but ran out of time. Martin put car owner and part time driver TJ Barker in victory lane for the first time. Following the Canton OH driver in the State Farm Insurance, GMC Heating & Cooling, Country Mart, Canton Auto Sales, Advanced Auto Parts and The Music Man Jim Kelly sponsored #11 was Ritchey, Pringle, Larry Smith and Gary Hoopingarner. ,br>
The final race of week #5 was the 15 lap second South Philly Pizza Compact feature. The #64 of Trevor Kohl and Justin VanFossen in the #61 led the field to green. Kohl would take the lead as Tim Frederick in the #18 made a three wide move to second. Frederick worked to the outside of Kohl and those two battled wheel to wheel, trading the lead several times until the caution flew on lap 9 as Marcus Cox in the #169 spun on the back straightaway after contact from the #47 of Erik Kugler. After the green came back out, Frederick took the lead as VanFossen got back up to second. That was the good news for Frederick. The bad news was that he ran 2 laps under his qualifying time, bringing out the caution on lap 11, sending him to the tail. Kohl would battle for a lap in the outside lane before VanFossen took control and went on to win his first feature in several years. Allen Clark in the #0 was able to get around Kohl for second. Finishing out the top 5 behind the Tusky OH driver in the #61 was Clark, Kohl, Jimmy Devoono and Jesse James.
