New Winner's In 2017 Find Victory Lane
May 13, 2017
New Winner's In 2017 Find Victory LaneOn a picture perfect evening at the race track to kick off Mother's Day weekend, the kids seemed to love the new Frisbee Race, the driver's shook things up with choosing their own lanes and there was only one repeat winner in Finish Line Motor's Victory Lane. Sixty six car and truck combinations came out on DLP Commercial Maintenance Systems night at "Thunder In The Valley". It was 69 degrees with sunny skies at race time.

The opening feature of the evening was the South Philly Pizza Compact 15 lap fast feature. Dan Buckey in the #69 and Tim Frederick in the #18 started on the front row. Buckey squirted out to the lead bringing Brandon France with him in the #38. The first caution flew on lap 3 with Justin Renicker in the #175 and fastest qualifier Brent Shreffler in the #24 getting together on the main straightaway, Renicker would retire for the evening. Driver's chose their lanes and there were no major shakeup's in the order. After a 3 lap, side by side battle for the lead with Buckey, France was able to clear the #69 to take the lead on lap 6. The second caution waved on lap 7 as a chain reaction mix up happened in turn 2, sending the Shreffler machine to the infield to escape damage. Even though it wasn't necessarily his fault, everyone continued but he was off the pace in the infield. He then decided to pull up on the front straightaway via the infield, bringing out a caution. That is a no-no and he was sent to the pits. Driver's again were able to choose their lanes and the gainer was the #27 of Britt Vanmeter. He gained 2 spots from 6th to 4th by choosing the outside. Clayton Oliver in the #19 went from 3rd to the outside of the front row. After the green flew, Oliver and France would trade the lead until Oliver made a nice crossover move from the top to the bottom to take over the top spot. After the final caution flew on lap 11, nobody really gained much on the choosing of lanes and I'm not sure it would have mattered. Oliver, who was leading the first two weeks and was black flagged for his rear bumper cover coming off and causing a caution, yes both times it happened, wasn't going to be denied. With a secure back bumper and a driver who was up on the wheel, he cruised into victory lane to greet a very happy Frisbee winner. Following the Malvern OH driver in the Vegas Nights, Crislip Motorsports, TJ's Automotive, Finish Line Designs and Deluxe Body Shop sponsored #19 was Vanmeter, France, Buckey and Kyle Finlayson.

The Summit Racing Economy Modified's were up next with their 25 lapper. Laney Striejewske in the #17 and Derek Grewell in the #99 led the field down for the start. Striejewske hung tough on the bottom until Grewell, substituting for his brother, took control into turn three. Grewell would lead the first 2 laps until Mike Bowers in the #02 got to his outside. Grewell, fighting a loose race car, would give up the lead to Bowers and 2nd to the #38 of Kevin McClintock. McClintock was on the charge from the 8th starting position when the first caution flew on lap 4 for Striejewske in turn four. Everyone stayed status quo when choosing their lanes for the first time, with Bowers and McClintock on the front row. The Wild Bill Bitticker throwback paint scheme #38 shot to the lead on the restart and was able to maintain a couple car length lead when the second and final caution flew for a pile up in turn one. Shawn Marder in the #25 got sideways and collected the #13 of fastest qualifier Bill Shimko and the #11 of Trey Williams. Striejewske, who had her brakes go soft the lap prior, was trying to get slowed down to get to the pits. She went high to miss the accident and hit the pit divider in turn two, taking a hard shot, but thankfully, she was ok. Williams, Shimko and Marder would all continue with damage. The only change for the restart was Lee McCreery in the #2 moved from 3rd to 2nd with Bowers choosing to stay on the bottom. McCreery would fight for a lap in the outside lane, but McClintock, who hasnt been to victory lane this season, was determined. He not only wanted to win one for his Mom on Mother's Day, but it was also her birthday. He would continue to pull away and let McCreery and Brandon Bailey in the #55 argue over the runner up spot. Finishing the top 5 behind the Dover OH driver in the Broadrun Cheese House, Federated Auto Parts, VanMeter's Auto, C&K Auto Detailing, Dean Mowls @ Ferris Chevrolet, Blick Tool & Die, Schwartz Trucking sponsored #38 was McCreery, Bailey, Bowers and Shawn Kaufman.

The JD Byrider Street Stock 20 lap feature had the #21 of Sam Bigham and the #1 of Gary Hoopingarner leading the field to the stripe. Bigham, subbing for Colton Ritchey, battled in the bottom lane for a lap and a half until "Magic Shoes" too the race lead away. On lap 3, points leader and fastest qualifier Gabe Pringle in the #7, slowed and pulled to the infield with transmission issues. At the same time, something happened to Jimmy Orr in the #28 as he slowed in turn four, bringing out the first caution. The big mover on the choosing of lanes was Larry Smith in the #44 who went from 4th to 2nd and Bob Passwaters Sr who went from 7th to 5th. Hoopy would continue to lead despite a hard challenge from Smith. Bear Schwartz in the #77B was up to the 3rd spot, but slowed a few laps later. Caution #2 waved on lap 8 as the #77 of Josh Moss and the #11 of Mike Martin got together in turn two while battling for 5th, sending Moss spinning and Martin to the tail. Not a whole lot of shuffling for the restart as Hoopy would again lead until he and Smith had some contact off turn four. Smith would take over the point. The 3rd and final caution flew on lap 15 as Tom Earley in the #31 broke something in the right front suspension. Smith, Hoopy and Bigham all chose the bottom. Moss, running 4th decided to try the high side, moving him up to the outside of the front row. After the restart, Smith led on the bottom as Moss tried to hang on the top. With 4 laps to go, Moss swung his machine from the high lane to the bottom in turn one. He suprised Smith and was able to power by on the inside with an incredible crossover move. Martin, who went to the high lane on the restart behind Moss, was now applying pressure to the leader. Moss was able to hang on and greet an ecstatic frisbee winner in victory lane. Smith was able to nip Martin at the line for 2nd. Following the New Cumberland OH driver in the Peterman Plumbing, BCS, Buckey Mowing, Jim Romig Excavating, Sommerdale Inn, Lindentree, Tolloti Pipe and Haas Body Shop sponsored #77 was Smith, Martin, Hoopingarner and Passwaters Sr.

Next up was the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model 30 lap feature. Dave Martin in the #3 and Mack Gribble in the #45 led the field down to Chief Starter Terry Colletti's green flag. Gribble got the jump early pulling Bob Schneider Jr in the #17 with him. Flyin Ryan Tedesco in the #701 was carving his way through the top 5 and was able to get around Gribble via the high side on lap 4. Tom Stankiewicz in the #42 and Bryant Smith in the #1 were able to get around Schneider as well. The first caution flew on lap 5 for newcomer Albert Francis in the #33, who spun off turn four. Tedesco would choose the high lane, Gribble the bottom with Stankiewicz and Smith both going to the top, allowing Schneider the inside of row 2. On the restart, Smith made contact with Stankiewicz, spinning them both along with fastest qualifier Alex Rosenberry in the #2 in turn three. Smith was sent to the tail. Tedesco was able to get the jump on Gribble and began to pull away. Rosenberry was able to get around the #42 and #45 when the 3rd and final caution flew on lap 8 as Gribble spun in turn two. Everyone assumed Tedesco would choose the outside lane, but he didn't. That put Rosenberry to his outside for the final restart. Tedesco would spin his tires ever so slightly and that's all Rosenberry needed to take the top spot. Tedesco would hound the #2 as they encountered lapped traffic but the mistake he was waiting for, never came. Rosenberry would go on to pick up his first win of 2017 with his new sponsor's employees greeting him in Finish Line Motor's Victory Lane. Completing the top 5 behind the New Philadelphia OH driver in the Rosenberry Towing, Flite Test and DLP Commercial Maintenance Systems sponsored #2 was Tedesco, Smith, Stankiewicz and Schneider Jr.

The Finish Line Motor's Mini Truck 12 lap feature had the #2T of Bill Aubihl and Tim Scott in the #4 leading the field to green. "Wild" Bill took the lead for the first 2 laps, subbing for Barney Gerber, until "Mr. Smooth" Rich Schweitzer worked to his high side. After a lap battle Schweitzer took over the top spot, and set his sights on 3 straight wins to start the season. Aubihl along with last year's Champion and fastest qualifier Colt Locker in the #118 would dual for the 2nd spot for the final 8 circuits. Locker tried the high lane and pulled even, but the veteran of the Sport Stock and now Street Stock division fought back. With a few laps to go, Locker would try to get to the inside, but was unable to get by. Schweitzer would go on to pick up the win and greet a wide-eyed frisbee winner in victory lane. The young man not only got to celebrate with the Schweitzer's in victory lane, but got to take home the winner's trophy. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the VanMeter's Auto, Allen's Muffler, Federated Auto Parts and Alicia Manley MD sponsored #84 was Aubihl, Locker, Michael Varnes and Scott.

The final race of week #3 was the second South Philly Pizza Compact 15 lapper with the #41 of Scott Espenchied and the #83 of Gary Gibson leading the way. At the drop of the green, Korey Herron was driving like a man possessed. He went up the middle, 3 wide twice, to pull along side Alex Striejewske in the #21A for the lead. Striejewske hung tough for 2 laps until Herron was able to clear him and take over the top spot. Allen Clark in the #0 and "Little Animal" Tyler Eichel looked strong early, moving up to 2nd and 4th respectively. The first caution was for Striejewske, who ran 2 laps under his qualifying time on lap 4. Nothing changed in the top 5 as everyone kept their positions while choosing their lane. Clark was able to get a good restart and take over the lead until the second caution flew on lap 5. Eichel spun in the outside lane in turn one and was t-boned by Gibson, who was running near the back. Both drivers were attended to by medical personnel with Eichel being taken to the hospital for further evaluation. At press time, both drivers were said to be ok, just very sore. After the restart, the #3 of Jesse Patterson was on the move. He would carve his way up to the race lead on lap 7 but was penalized for a second time on the night for running 2 laps under his qualifying time. That gave the lead back to Clark and despite a few late race restarts, was able to hang on for his first career feature victory. Clark, son of Midvale Speedway legend Delmar Clark, had been close on many occasions but for one thing or another was held out of victory lane. He was greeted by another happy frisbee winner and friends when he climbed out of his machine. Following the Sherrodsville OH driver in the Hill of Horror, Mid-Vid Racing Videos, Leggett Tire and AC/DC racing sponsored #0 was Herron, Ryan Shreffler, Leeza Moore and Patterson.

Midvale Speedway would like to THANK DLP Commercial Maintenance Systems, Alex Rosenberry and The Barrel Room Wine and Beer Bar for their give-away's and sponsoring week #3.
