Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| July 16, 2016 |
Fans showed up to the Speedway in throwback racing attire and won some prizes for participating, while getting to watch a full slate of racing. Some of the Driver's were able to turn back the clock and pick up prizes of their own to treat another good crowd on a beautiful Saturday evening. Sixty car and truck combinations pulled into the 3/10 mile oval and it was 84 degrees and sunny at race time.
First to pull out was the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model's for their 30 lap feature. The #45 of Gary Hoopingarner and Mark Willison in the #18 brought the field to Chief Starter Terry Colletti's green flag. Willison would take the lead off turn two with Hoopingarner tucked in right behind. Bob Schneider Jr in the #17 and the #02 of Jesse Page spent the first five laps battling for the 3rd spot until Schneider finally prevaild. Page was impressive, showing plenty of speed all day long, from practice all the way through the feature. The first caution flew on lap 11 as Schneider spun in turn two. On the restart, Willison again pulled out front as Hoopy and Bryant Smith in the #1 battled for second. Bubba Smith in the #12 was also working his way to the front. Bubba was able to take 3rd after brother Bryant took control of 2nd. Bryant would begin to work on Willison for the top spot until something in the rear suspension broke going into turn three on lap 15. Bryant did a nice job to not wad up the #1 machine, but his night was over. That put Bubba on the outside of Willison for the restart and fastest qualifier Tom Stankiewicz in the #42 was just behind Bubba in the outside lane. Smith was able to take over the top spot as Stankiewicz would cut a tire and be forced pit side, another bad break for the #42. After a couple quick cautions on laps 16 and lap 22, Smith would maintain about a 5 - 6 car length lead over Willison as he would notch up his 5th win in 2016. Following the North Canton OH driver in the Finish Line Motor's, Finish Line Design's, Smith's Auto Sales, Freedom Auto Finance sponsored #12 was Willison, Hoopingarner, Page and Schneider.
Jimmy McCune in the #22 and Jason Grewell in the #99 started on the front row for the 25 lap Summit Racing Economy Modified feature. Grewell, making only his second start of the season, got a great jump and sped off into the lead. McCune was able to hold the second position through the first four circuits until Mike Bowers in the #02 was able to get around the outside and take over the spot. Grewell was looking strong out front but Bowers was closing in little by little. Bryce Allensworth in the #21 took over the 3rd spot momentarily until the #38 of Kevin McClintock got along side. McClintock started 8th and was on an absolute tear around the outside. The only caution flew on lap 9 as the field got stacked up in turn two, leaving the #27 of Braden Swaney sideways, resulting in him being the unfortunate reason for the caution, not the cause, sending him to the rear. Bowers would take the lead on the restart after Grewell battled hard for a lap, but just didn't quite have the car he needed to fend him off. Shortly after Bowers got around, McClintock was able to do the same. With 11 laps remaining, the #38 was all over Bowers, everyone knew that it was just a matter of when, not if. Then on lap 16, McClintock rocketed to the high side and set sail towards Downtown Ford Victory Lane. Lee McCreery in the #2 was able to dice his way through the field up to the 2nd position, but nobody had anything for McClintock. One of the few multi time Champions in multiple divisions, showed the field how to use the outside lane to perfection. Rounding out the top 5 behind the Dover OH driver in the Broadrun Cheese House, Glass Lumber, Federated Auto Parts, C&K Auto Detailing, VanMeter's Auto Repair, Dean Mowls at Ferris Chevrolet, Blick Tool & Die, Davie Electric and Schwartz Trucking Sponsored #38 was point leader McCreery, Bowers, Grewell and Allensworth.
The JD Byrider Street Stock feature had the #75 of Bob Passwaters Sr and the #31 of Tom Earley bringing the field down for the start. Passwaters jumped out front and controlled the first 12 laps of the 20 lap event. Earley ran second with the #77 of Josh Moss in 3rd. Moss would play both sides of the street to keep the #21 of Phillip Cox and the #7 of Gabe Pringle behind. Lap after lap, Moss would hold them both off, allowing Earley to stay in 2nd and Passwaters to build up a gap. The first caution waved on lap 10 as Bill Shimko, driving the #11 for TJ Barker, got into Moss. After the restart, Passwaters would again take the point as Moss began to show smoke for the 3rd week in a row. The bad luck bug has definatly hit the Moss/Miller team the last month or so, it appeared as though another motor or transmission issue. The caution waved on lap 12 for the fluid being put down by the #77. Under caution, Pringle pulled into the infield and stopped, restarting after a few minutes. After the race, we learned he lost both of his contacts, basically driving by feel, but unwilling to take a DNF......that may be a Title winning move, we will find out as the season wears on. On the restart on lap 12, Kyle Grove in the #3 came out of nowhere and snatched the lead. Mr "where did he come from", was now leading and pulling away. Passwaters would do a great job holding off Larry Smith in the #44 and a blind Pringle, returning to the winning form he had a year ago. Grove would punch his ticket to victory circle for the 4th time this season with an impressive run. Following the Uhrichsville OH driver in the JD Byrider, CNAC Financing, El Pueblito Mexican Cuisine, South Philly Pizza and Greg's Recovery sponsored #3 was Passwaters, Smith, Pringle and Waylon Orr.
Rich Schweitzer in the #84 and Colt Locker in the #118 brought the field to the line in the Finish Line Motor's Mini Truck 12 lapper. The wily veteran with multiple Championships in multiple divisions and surfaces, raced out to the early advantage. The throwback Bud Middaugh paint scheme looked good out front as Locker and Joe Linard in the #82 battled side by side for second. Fastest qualifier Roger Linard in his #28 truck had no where to go with his boy and Locker dueling for second. If Schweitzer had a mirror, he would be loving what he was seeing. Those 2 battling side by side with the #28 stuck behind and they all would be getting smaller in that mirror. Finally, with 4 laps to go, Locker was able to take control of the runner up spot, but that's all he would be on this night, the runner up. Schweitzer would put the handling issues from last week behind him and pick up his second victory of the season. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the VanMeter's Auto Repair, Allen's Muffler, Federated Auto Parts and Alicia Manly MD sponsored #84 was Locker, the younger Linard, the older Linard and Cody Jaberg, who was driving a truck on loan from last year's Champion Keith Anderson, after his bad accident last week. It's great to see the racing family continuing to help each other out in a time of need!!!
Finally, it was time for the Canton Auto Salvage Compact's to take the green for their 20 lap feature. Brandon France in the #38 and Dan Buckey in the #69 brought the field down for the start. Buckey would take control as Clayton Oliver in the #19 made a 3-wide move going into turn three, to take over 2nd. Buckey, a former Champion, and Oliver both don't have the horsepower as some of the other machines, but what they do have is handling! Both cars can go where their driver's need them to go. Britt Vanmeter in the #27 was on the move as he got around France to move into the top 5. As Buckey and Oliver ran nose to tail, Mike McDonald in the #16, Fastest qualifier Gage Jaberg in the #21, Brent Shreffler in the #24 and Vanmeter were putting on a great race. The problem was, they continued to race hard with each other, swapping positions each and every lap.....allowing the front two to sneak away. The veteran Buckey pulled about 5 - 6 car lengths on Oliver in the middle stages but Buckey admitted he started "getting tired". The lead evaporated with 3 laps to go. Oliver was all over the #69, but the cagey vet dug deep and held on for the win. This was the 3rd feature to go Green to Checkered!! Buckey vowed in victory lane to increase his fitness regime over the second half of the season. Following the Mid-Vid Racing Videos, Buckey Mowing, Ember Complete Care, Parkway Auto Group, Brown's Heating and Cooling, Accurate Auto Repair, Shook Auto, Riddle Trucking, Huntington Bank and Davis Radiator sponsored #69 was Oliver, McDonald, Vanmeter and Jaberg.
Saturday Night July 23rd is Diano Supply Night featuring the fastest cars that run at "Thunder In The Valley", the MSA Winged Supermodifeds. Late Model's, Street Stock's, Mini Truck's and Compact's will all be on hand. This is a race, you won't want to miss!!!
