Orr and Vanmeter Double Up
June 11, 2016
Orr and Vanmeter Double UpThe racing on the track was almost as hot as the temperature this past Saturday Night June 11th. We finished up the program that was on hold because of rain on June 4th and completed another full program for 99.9 WTUZ / Midvale Karting Series Night at "Thunder In The Valley". Sixty Five car and truck combinations were pit side along with 11 Karts. It was 89 degrees and sunny at race time.

The first feature to hit the Speedway was the 25 lap makeup feature for the Summit Racing Economy Modified's. Cristian Bailey in the #37 and Matt Hutchinson in the #6 brought the field to green. Bailey would lead lap one from the bottom lane, despite the field staying in formation the first 2 1/2 circuits. Braden Swaney put his machine on the bottom lane off turn two and completed a nice 3-wide pass for the top spot just before the first caution waved. Swaney looked strong out front until a lap 7 restart, thats when Lucas Ripley in his #0 machine was able to blast by in the outside lane. Ripley would start to pull away and let Swaney and Kevin McClintock in the #38 argue over second. McClintock was able to finally take the second spot and set his sights on the leader. After the third and final caution on lap fourteen, McClintock was able to lead by a nose at the line, but Ripley was hooked up in the heat of the day. Ripley was able to clear and hold off the #38 to pick up his first feature victory of the season. Following the Uhrichsville OH driver in the Brindley Trucking, LTR Industries, Ridgco Pallet, D&B Machine, TVU Graphics sponsored #0 was McClintock, Bubba Smith, Swaney, and Bryce Allensworth.

The regular 25 lap Modified Feature was another good one. Shawn Marder in the #25 and the #55 of Brandon Bailey led the field down for the start. Bailey was able to lead lap 1 by a nose but Marder led the rest of the first five until the first caution. The field once again stayed pretty much in side by side formation at the front. Marder was able to get a nice restart and lead as Bryce Allensworth in the #21 moved up to second. Allensworth, racing for his father after a medical scare earlier this week, was determined to get around Marder. Finally, on a lap 10 restart, he was able to make the move in the outside lane. Preston Walker in the #30, Lee McCreery in the #2 and Kevin McClintock in the #38 all started to pull away from the field as they decided to stay single file and let some laps click away. With only a handful of laps remaining, we thought a final restart would decide who would end up sipping champagne. Walker and Allensworth both got good jumps off turn four, some slight racing contact ensued on the front straightaway, but both drivers kept their machines headed in the right direction. Walker was able to prevail off turn two and pull his machine into victory circle for the second time in 2016, that is until he was disqualified in post race tech. So, Allensworth picked up his first win in 2016 for his Dad. Following the Tusky OH driver in the Star Strategies Safe Money Management #21 was McCreery, McClintock, Marder and Bailey.

In JD Byrider Street Stock make-up feature action, the #21 of Phillip Cox and the #11 of TJ Barker paced the field for the 20 lapper. Cox was able to get the advantage on the start and take over the top spot. Waylon Orr "wheeled" his #28 up to the second spot and Kyle Grove in the #3 followed. Orr would poke his nose inside and outside looking for a way around and Grove would take them both 3-wide at times. Fastest qualifier Gabe Pringle in the #7 made a nice charge up to the leaders to make it a four-way just as the only caution waved on lap five. Those four drivers would put on a whale of a show for the remaining 15 laps. Dicing Inside and outside, high and low, over and under, maybe even through the woods!! The foursome would mix it up each and every lap in exciting fashion. Orr would fend off challenges, first by Pringle and then by Grove, to capture the twin checkered flags in a great race!! Rounding out the top 5 behind the New Philadelphia OH driver in the Mallett Energy, Buckey Mowing sponsored #28 was Grove, Pringle, Barker and Joe Ujcich filling in for Larry Smith in the #44.

The regular 20 lap feature for the Street Stock's would have more of the same great racing that took place in the first. Adam Stewart, now driving the Larry Smith #44, would start from the pole with TJ Barker in the #11 starting along side. Stewart would lead lap one, bringing Orr with him up to second with Barker falling to third. Orr would put his machine on the high side and work his way around Stewart on lap 3. Meanwhile, the #7 of Gabe Pringle was marching from the back, after once again being the fastest qualifier. Picking guys off one at a time, it looked as though he was gonna get up to second and then be in desperate need of a caution to catch Orr. But that's when the beat of the drum Pringle was marching to, came to an abrupt hault. Working the high lane around the #11, Barker got in too deep entering turn one and the two made contact. Pringle would end up making a great save in turn three after both tie rods were broken in the contact, putting an end to his night. That put Stewart to the outside of Orr and he would put up a valiant effort, but Orr sealed his plans for completing the double. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the Mallett Energy, Buckey Mowing sponsored #28 was Barker, Kyle Grove, Josh Moss and Bear Schwartz who made his return to racing in quite a few years.

The only Division not running a double header was the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model's. Mark Willison in the #18 and Bryant Smith in the #1 brought the field to Chief Starter Terry Colletti's green flag for their 30 lap feature. Willison would take the advantage with Bryant battling in the outside lane. Bob Schneider Jr in the #17 and Matthew Mills in the #4 were mixing it up behind the leaders, as well as the rest of the top eight over the first eight circuits. Bryant would lead a lap and Willison would lead the next, back and forth they went putting on another spectacular show. On lap fourteen, Mills got into the back of the #1 causing the first caution. Unfortunately, something broke in the rear end of Bryant's machine, ending his night. On the restart, Schneider got a good run on the outside into turn one. Heading down the back straightaway, Schneider started to drop to the low lane, but Willison was still there. The two made contact, resulting in a cut left rear, a spin and the end of the night for Schneider. That put the #2 of Alex Rosenberry on the outside of Willison for the restart, and Rosenberry shot out of a cannon into turn one. Rosenberry would check out as Tom Stankiewicz in the #42 moved up to second. Just when you thought the race looked to be over, Rosenberry was bit by the bad luck bug with a flat right front in turn 3, ending his night on lap nineteen. Stankiewicz would inherit the top spot with Mills along side for the final restart. Mills made a nice run to get back up into position to fight for the win. Bubba Smith in the #12 would restart in the third position. The top three would wage a nice fight for the win over the final eleven laps. Mills tried multiple times in the outside lane until something happened on lap 25 as he slowed abruptly with an issue and was forced to retire his machine. Smith would stalk Stankiewicz, keeping the pressure on. The more Smith pushed, the looser Stankiewicz's car became. Finally, on lap 28, Bubba snatched the lead away from the ill handling #42 and parked it into victory lane. Following the North Canton OH driver in the Finish Line Motor's, Finish Line Design's, Smith's Auto Sales, Freedom Auto Finance sponsored #12 to the stripe was Stankiewicz, Larry Baker, Gary Hoopingarner and Willison.

The Finish Line Motor's Mini Truck's lined up for their 10 lap makeup feature with the #22 of Cody Jaberg and the #84 of Rich Schweitzer bringing the field down for the start. Codeman would put up a fight, but the long time veteran Schweizer would prevail in the outside lane. Schweitzer wound up checking out momentarily, as the #118 of Colt Locker and Jaberg locked horns for second. It took too much time for the #118 to work his way around the #22 and that may have been the difference. Schweitzer wouldn't put a wheel out of place, just as he has done for so many years. Mr Smooth would hold off Locker to pick up his first Mini Truck feature win. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the VanMeter's Auto, Allen's Muffler, Federated Auto Parts, Alicia Manly MD sponsored #84 was Locker, Jaberg and Linard who exited after the opening lap.

The regular Mini Truck 10 lap feature would be a little different. Keith Anderson in the #32 and Cody Jaberg in the #22 would start up front. Jaberg would lead lap one as Anderson, who has been decimated with mechanical issues all year long, would fade. Smokin Joe Linard in the #82 would use the high lane to work his way around Jaberg on lap 3. Not to many competitor's have gotten more work over the years in the high lane, or are better at it than Linard. He would need that experience once Colt Locker in the #118 caught him. Locker would stick his nose underneath the #82 and looked as if he may set sail. Linard had other ideas. The #82 was good on the top side and he had to claw tooth and nail to stay even with Locker. After a couple laps of side by side dogfighting, Linard would prevail via the outside. Picking up another victory was the Dover OH driver in the CinnaVapes Premium E-Liquid, Dover Drywall, Russ Moore & Son's Concrete, Racer 8 Performance, Rick Watson Trucking, Buckey Auto Sales, South Philly Pizza, Ennis Hauling sponsored #82. Rounding out the finishing order was Locker, Rich Schweitzer, Jaberg and Anderson.

The Canton Auto Salvage Compact 20 lap makeup feature was another exciting event. Jeremiah Hartline in the #169 and the #38 of Brandon France paced the field. France would lead the first lap until Kyle Finlayson in the #15 worked his way to the top spot. Sportsmanship is something that has really been fading the last 10-15 years, but every once in awhile, someone steps up. The driver of the #30 Korey Herron, a second generation driver, did just that after he got into the back of the #4 of Blaine Salsberry in turn 2. It's sad that something as simple as admitting fault for an accident would make a headline because it's something that should happen every week!! Nonetheless, Herron admitted fault for the first caution and went to the tail, giving the #4 his spot back. Gage Jaberg in the #21 moved up to the second spot on the restart, fastest qualifier Britt Vanmeter in the #27 and Salsberry were charging as well. Just past the halfway point it was Finlayson leading with Jaberg and Vanmeter all over him. Salsberry got held up a little bit getting around France and Hartline, allowing the front 3 to open up a gap. As the laps clicked off the board, Salsberry was running the front three down, Jaberg started to have an issue. The car seemed to develop a misfire, costing him a shot at the win. After the second and final caution, Vanmeter blasted out to the lead from the outside lane. Vanmeter has had some great looking machines, he has picked up his share of preliminary wins, he has been the fastest qualifier on occasion, but a feature victory at Midvale has eluded him. After the great restart, he would cruise the final 3 laps and pick up that first feature win. Following the Cuyahoga Falls OH driver in the Outlaw Vinyl Graphics, Cater 4 You sponsored #27 was Salsberry, Jaberg, Finlayson and France.

The 15 lap fast Compact feature had the #169 of Jeremiah Hartline and Sam Bingham in the #3D on the front row. Now, I know I keep talking about these all being good races, but it's true!! There wasnt a ton of cautions or stupid driving, for the most part, every one raced hard and clean all night long. The #27 of Britt Vanmeter would start 11th in his bid to double up. Bingham would lead the opening lap, Hartline would lead the next several. The #19 of Clayton Oliver and the #4 of Blaine Salsberry were charging hard through the field, but contact between the two of them would stall out their momentum. On lap seven, Salsberry repaid the contact, only this time it resulted in a spin, bringing out the first caution and sending him pits side for rough driving. After the restart, Hartline was doing everything but mortgaging his house to stay in the bottom lane. Bingham, Mike McDonald in the #16 and Vanmeter were desperately trying to get around. Finally, on lap eleven Vanmeter made his move. Working high and low he was able to take over the point on lap 13. The mad scramble at the front was between Hartline, McDonald, Finlayson and Bingham, but that would be for second. Vanmeter was able to stretch out his lead just enough, to pick up his second win on the night. Following the Cuyahoga Falls OH driver in the Outlaw Vinyl Graphics, Cater 4 You sponsored #27 was Finlayson, Hartline, McDonald and Gage Jaberg.

The final event of the evening was the second 15 lap Compact feature. Bruce Gibson in the #32 and James Butts in the #11 started up front. Gibson would take the early lead with Korey Herron in the #30 running second. Travis Riddle in the #7 and Tim Frederick in the #18 were on the move from the back. Riddle was able to work his way around Gibson for the top spot and Frederick moved to second. As the duo battled for the top spot, they encountered lapped traffic. Riddle went low, Frederick went high, both decisions ended up being the wrong one. The lapped machine pushed Frederick into the front straightaway wall, as the #18 bounced off of the wall, he tried to save it, but wasn't able to. He clipped Riddle, sending him hard into the turn 1 wall, eliminating them both. Toby Cook in the #51 inherited the top spot, as Herron had a fire under his machine during the caution. Cook would smoke the field, fry the competition, bake his competitor's and pull into victory lane for his first feature victory at Midvale. Following the Canton OH driver in The Hubbard Photography sponsored #51 was Noah Patterson, Gibson, Garriet Durben and Butts.
