Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| May 7, 2016 |
Midvale Speedway was lucky all day and into the evening as we avoided Mother Nature's wrath, that is until a little after 9:00. Just as the Street Stock feature was getting underway, the lightning and precipitation put an end to All Parts Auto Care / Twin State Auto Racing Club / $1 Hot Dog and $1 Pop Night at "Thunder In The Valley". Fifty five car and truck combinations showed up despite the weather. It was overcast and 72 degrees at race time.
The first feature to pull onto the Speedway, was the Summit Racing Economy Modified's for their 25 lap event. Lucas Ripley in the #0 and Braden Swaney in the #27 led the field to Chief Starter Terry Colletti's green flag. Ripley would race out front by a half of a car length for the first 3/4 of a lap. Coming off turn 4, Swaney's car snapped loose on him, dropping him back to 5th. Lee McCreery in the #2 found himself in a great position running third behind the #55 of Brandon Bailey. McCreery would make quick work of Bailey and set his sights on Ripley. On lap 8, McCreery was able to get to the inside of Ripley and surprisingly, Ripley decided to not close the door when the opportunity arose. The deuce would complete the move and set sail. Bailey was able to get around Ripley a lap later, but could only keep pace with McCreery in traffic. Unfortunately for Swaney, another top 5 bid was cut short after contact with a lapped machine with two laps to go, as he battled for position. McCreery, who won on opening night, would make it 2 for 3 so far in 2016. A call goes out to all the Driver's who minded their P's and Q's, rather they were a lapped machine or they were lapping a machine, everyone respected one another. The race ended up running from green to checkered. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the M&D Design's, Riddle Trucking, Gribble Fabrication, R&R Carb Service, Massillon Machine and Sick Puppy Tattoo Sponsored #2 to the finish was Bailey, Ripley, Kevin McClintock and Bryce Allensworth.
Next up was the Canton Auto Salvage Compact 20 lap feature. The #8 of Noah Patterson and the #38 of Brandon France started on the front row. What would you say, if I told you the first two features would go green to checkered? Would you believe me? Well....if you were a betting man playing the odds....you would have been rich!!! France raced out to the early lead with Cody Shields in the #92 in 2nd as Patterson dropped like a rock. By lap 3, the #15 of Kyle Finlayson had moved up to 2nd from his 5th starting position and the #24 of "Fireball" Brent Shreffler made a nice 3-wide move on the start, but paid for it in turn 1, dropping him back. Opening night feature winner Clayton Oliver in the #19, Britt Vanmeter in the #27 and fastest qualifier Gage Jaberg in the #21 put their machines nose to tail in the outside lane and started marching forward. On lap 6, Finlayson, the soft spoken youngster, made his move via the outside lane to take over the point. With 5 laps to go, the top 4 were nose to tail and would trade 3 of the 4 positions. The only one that didn't change? The lead!! Finlayson was able to fend off Vanmeter and company to pick up his first win of the season in another exciting, green to checkered finish. Rounding out the top 5 behind the Bolivar OH driver in the Finlayson Towing, Finlayson Trucking, Tedesco Racing Graphics sponsored #15 was Vanmeter, Jaberg, Oliver and France.
The final feature to beat the storms was the 30 lap McIntosh Oil Company Late Model's. "Magic Shoes" Gary Hoopingarner in the #45 and Bryant Smith in the #1 brought the field to the stripe. Hoopingarner was able to lead lap one, but the younger Smith was able to clear Hoopy off turn two of the second circuit. On lap 3, the older brother Smith was able to take over the second spot in his #12 and he brought Alex Rosenberry in the #2 along. Finally, the first caution all night waved on lap 7 for the #4 of Matthew Mills and the #6 of Larry Baker, who got tangled up off turn 4, both would continue. The middle part of the race was highly contested with battles in different groups. Bryant was fending off challenges from Bubba and Rosenberry for the lead, about a half straightaway back was the #22 of Todd Ripley and the #42 of Tom Stankiewicz going at it and Behind them was Hoopingarner trying to hold back the fastest qualifier Mills. Time and time again each car in front of their perspective battles, was able to hold off the challengers. On lap 20, Mills got into Hoopingarner's right rear going into turn 3, sending the #45 into the wall drivers side first. The red flag flew as track crews and medical personnel attended to the long time Midvale Speedway veteran. After several minutes, Gary was able to be helped into the ambulance. He would be checked out at a local the hospital and diagnosed with a mild concussion, some bumps and bruises, but all in all, a great report after a very scary incident. Thankfully, all the safety devices and a well built race car prevented further injury, a lesson to be learned for everyone. Back under the green flag after the lengthy delay, the sky was lighting up like the 4th of July and some light sprinkles were starting to fall. A good four way battle for the win ensued. Rosenberry took his shot but was relegated to second. Bubba took his shot but had to settle for third. Stankiewicz even made his presence felt but finished 4th. On the day after his mom had another surgery as she continues to courageously fight her battle and a day before mother's day, Bryant Smith parked his machine in victory circle for the second time this year. Following the Canton OH driver in the Canton Auto Salvage, Finish Line Design's, Freedom Auto Finance sponsored #1 was Rosenberry, Bubba, Stankiewicz and Ripley.
Midvale Speedway would like to THANK EVERYONE for their thoughts and prayers for Gary Hoopingarner and Sue Smith and want to wish ALL THE MOM'S a VERY HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!
