Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| May 30, 2015 |
Mother nature threw her best punch in Week #5, but Track Officials landed a "Thunderous" right hook that sent the wet stuff home. We endured two rain showers, one at noon and another that made the top 3 Divisions revert back to their best practice time as their qualifying time. Through all the up's and down's, cloud's and sun, persistence would be rewarded and we started Frontier Tools and Equipment / Canton Auto Sales / Canton Auto Salvage / Little League Night right on time and ran it to completion. Fifty Five plus machines made the tow under partly cloudy skies and temps in the mid 80's at race time.
The first feature to hit the 3/10 mile oval was the JD Byrider Street Stock 20 lapper. The #75 of Bob Passwaters Sr started on the pole with Robbie Patterson in the #80 along side. Passwaters Sr would lead the opening circuit until Patterson made the move in the outside lane on a restart on lap two. Todd Miller in the #77 was on the move from the middle of the pack up to 3rd, but all eyes were on the 15 year old that has driven like he has been doing it his whole life, Colton Ritchey in the #21. Ritchey moved to the second spot until another restart on lap four, where he would power his machine into the top spot. Fastest qualifier and already a feature winner in his rookie campaign Kyle Grove in the #3 had worked his way to fourth and was looking to move up. Everyone in the joint thought Grove would pull up and challenge for the win, but that never materialized. Grove would settle in, battling for 3rd over the final 10 laps with Miller and Bob Passwaters Jr in the #74 as Ritchey set sail. The Midvale Karting Series Graduate hasnt put a wheel wrong in the first five nights. Following the Akron OH youngster in The Cardinal Asphalt, CRP Racing, Innovative Autosports sponsored #21 was Miller, Passwaters Jr, Grove and TJ Barker. Grove was disqualified for his suspension during post race inspection, moving Patterson into the top 5.
Next to hit the Speedway was the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model's for their 30 lap feature. This feature would turn out to be one of the best Late Model features in years. Bob Schneider Jr would start the Slentz #17 from the pole with heat race winner Ron Kirkpatrick in the #23 to his outside. Schneider would lead the first three laps with a very loose race car, until Mike Miller in the #53 powered around the outside. Miller would lead until he ran under his qualifying time, sending him to the tail on lap seven and handing the lead over to Flyin' Ryan Tedesco in the #70. Tedesco's stint out front would be short lived on older tires as the always good on restarts Bubba Smith in the #12 shot to the lead and pulled his brother Bryant in the #1 to second. Looming in the back half of the top 5 was newly graduated New Philadelphia Quaker Alex Rosenberry in the #2. On lap #13, Tom Stankiewicz in the #42 was sent to the tail for running under his qualifying time while running 5th, he and Miller would both rebound nicely. Bryant Smith was able to wrestle the lead away from Bubba on the restart and started to drive away, leaving his brother to battle it out with Tedesco and Rosenberry. After a couple cautions on lap twenty-five, Bubba was able to retake the lead and Rosenberry worked his way around the #1 and into second. A Tedesco and Bryant get together in turn four and a Schneider Jr spin set up a dash for the cash. Bubba as I said earlier, has been the master when it comes to restarts in the Late Model Division, but this time Rosenberry was like a flash of lightning, quick and bright to appear and then.....GONE! Rosenberry was able to checkout and pull his Flite Test, Rosenberry Towing sponsored machine into victory lane for the first time in 2015. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver was Bubba Smith, Bryant Smith, Mike Miller and Tom Stankiewicz rounding out the top 5.
The #95 of Michael Varnes and the #72 of Derek Cordia brought the Finish Line Motors Mini Truck 10 lap feature off of turn four to the stripe. Cordia would race out to the early lead until fastest qualifier Dusty Nicholas in the #23 made a move to the outside in turn three of lap four. When Nicolas went by on the high side his truck lost grip, probably from Cordia taking the air off his spoiler, causing him to spin and sending him to the tail for bringing out the races only caution. Back under green it appeared that maybe Cordia had the truck to break the Anderson / Nicolas family stranglehold on the Mini Truck Division, but his truck became loose off turn 4 and Anderson was able to make a picture perfect, crossover move to sail off into the sunset and pick up his 3rd feature win in a row and his 4th in the first 5 weeks of 2015. Following the Barnhill OH driver in the Dog Gone Trucking, M&D Designs sponsored #32 was Nicolas, Cordia, Varnes and Preston Kelly.
Nathan Embree in the #10 and the #112 of Austin Harvey brought the field down for Chief Starter Terry Colletti's Green Flag for the Summit Racing Economy Modified 25 lap feature. Harvey got the advantage into turn one and Chris Piehl in the #88 moved into second. On lap four, Harvey was black flagged for going under his qualifying time and sent to the tail. Piehl inherited the race lead with Mike Bowers in the #02 taking over second, Don Boron Jr in the #1 and last weeks 50 lap feature winner Rick Elkins Jr in the #51 battled for 3rd. On lap eight, Elkins and Boron got together, sending the #51 to the tail of the field. On the restart, Bowers flexed some muscle and took over the top spot with 2-time defending points champion Kevin McClintock in his #38 moving into second. McClintock hounded the Bowers machine until lap 13, when he swung his machine to the bottom and powered to the race lead. A few late race cautions bunched the field and allowed Bryce Allensworth in the #21, who diced his way through the field up into the second spot after starting near the rear, a shot. But McClintock was just too strong and would pick up his first win of 2015. The Modified Division now has 5 different winners in 5 different weeks of racing. Rounding out the top 5 behind the Dover OH driver in The Broadrun Cheese House, Glass Lumber, Federated Auto Parts, C&K Auto, Dean Mowls at Ferris Chevrolet and Blick Tool & Die sponsored #38 were Allensworth, Bowers, Brandon Bailey and Piehl.
The final race of the evening was one of the most entertaining and scariest races of week #5. The #16M of Mike McDonald and the #17 of Laney Striejewske brought the field to the stripe to start the 20 lap Canton Auto Salvage Compact feature. Striejewske would wheel her ride to the race lead with the #169 of Alan Clark close behind and the #15 of Kyle Finlayson working the outside groove. The scary happened off turn two on lap five as the Clark machine and Striejewske made contact, sending Laney towards the infield. When she tried to correct, the car took a bight and spun up the race track and was hit multiple times. Both Laney Striejewske and Dan Buckey were checked out by Smith Ambulance at the scene and denied being transported for further evaluation. Justin Renicker was also rumored to have an injury but we could not confirm that report at press time. A scary accident, but all three drivers being ok was the best news of the night! Once the race was restarted after about a 30 minute red flag, Clayton Oliver in the #19 took over the race lead with Gage Jaberg in the #21 and fastest qualifier Wes Ennis in the #50 close in tow. What would ensue was a 10 lap, 3 way dog fight for the feature victory. This was the entertaining part. Lap after lap, Jaberg would try to get a run on the outside but Oliver would slide up to take the lane away, then dive back to the bottom in the middle of the corner keeping Ennis at bay. Oliver was doing a masterful job at playing both sides of the street and Jaberg and Ennis were doing a great job at being patient and clean. On the final trip down the back straightaway, Ennis got a good run to the inside and Oliver had to throw the block. That put Ennis to the grass and gave Jaberg the outside lane he needed. Jaberg would power around the high side and take his first win of the year. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the Michael Taylor Allstate Insurance, C&K Auto, Rt. 39 Auto Salvage and Fox Auto Salvage and Parts sponsored #21 was Oliver, Ennis, Mike Swaney and Clark.
Next week at Midvale Speedway all 5 Divisions will be in action with the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model's going 50 laps in their feature on Gale's Recycle It Night at "Thunder In The Valley". See everyone Saturday Night June 6th.
