Mid-Season Champions Crowned At Midvale<br>Main Event Downtown Ford 100 Coming ThursdayThe 2014 Mid-Season Championships were held this past Saturday, June 28 at Midvale Speedway. Double points and larger trophies were up for grabs.

In the 30-lap McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division, a competitive field of cars lined up for the green. When present, Bryant Smith and Alex Rosenberry are two of the favorites to claim the feature win, along with current point leader, Mike Miller. On this night, another name was added to the list, as second year Late Model competitor, Matthew Mills showed some strength. Mills, a teenage New Philadelphia, Ohio driver, started on the outside of row one, with Joe Linard starting on the pole. Mills got the better start and raced into the lead at the outset and started to build a sizable advantage. Meanwhile, Linard, Miller, Rosenberry, Mike Mazzagatti and Smith were all battling behind him. Unfortunately for Mills, a caution for a power steering leak on the Rosenberry machine. Rosenberry went pitside but returned after the fluid was gone. Back to green, Mills was able to fend off challenges from Smith, who couldn’t get him on the double file restarts. Mills only close call was when he did open up the bottom with just a couple of laps to go. Smith pulled inside coming off of two but Mills slammed the door shut entering turn three. Smith jumped on the binders and Mills finished off his impressive run with his first career victory. Following the Dennison T-Shirt Graphics/Thompson Electric #4 across the line were Smith, Miller, Rosenberry, and Linard. The rest of the top ten were Mazzagatti, Larry Baker, Bob Schneider, Jr., Dave Martin, and Ricky Grudier. Miller and Linard won heats, while Smith set fast time.

20 competitors lined up, taking their shot at the Mid-Season Championship trophy in the Summit Racing Economy Modified division. Jason Grewell and Tad Grove were the front row starters for the 25-lap grind, with Grove taking the early advantage. Grove, coming off of back-to-back wins, looked as though he had a good chance for his third. However, Modified veteran Glen Jewell, who started in the fourth spot, raced around Grewell with ease and started a challenge for the lead. Jewell eventually was able to get around Grove on the high lane and set sail out front. At that point, all eyes were on second fast qualifier, Preston Walker, who was racing his way from mid-pack. Walker started outside the top ten and methodically worked his way forward. Walker was up to 7th by lap seven, 4th by lap ten, and moved into 2nd on lap 18. Walker caught Jewell with relative ease and immediately shot to the outside. Over the last number of laps, the duo raced side-by-side with Jewell holding the slight edge. At the checkered, it was the 63-year old Jewell claiming his first win of the year, while one of the younger drivers in the division finished second. Also following the Texas Roadhouse/J.D. Byrider #24 in the top five were Grove, Mike Green, and Jason Grewell. The rest of the top ten were Kevin McClintock, Don Boron, Jr., Chris Piehl, Lee McCreery, and Mike Bowers. Bubba Smith, Boron, and Bowers won the heats, while Bob Sibila, Jr. set fast time.

Canton, Ohio driver and point leader Mike Martin led the first seven laps of the J.D. Byrider Street Stock feature, looking for his fourth feature win. On the move, to no one’s surprise, was Rick Elkins, Jr. Elkins started the race around mid-pack and after picking up four positions over the first five laps, was in second. Elkins ran down Martin and used the second groove to race out front. At the checkered of the event, Elkins crossed the stripe 1.5 seconds ahead of the second place Martin. In post-race inspection, however, Elkins car was found to have unapproved changes to the valve spring retainers in his crate engine, disallowing the win. Martin ended up claiming the trophy, his fourth of the season. The Canton Car Connection/Twin’s Auto Sales #6 was followed in the official rundown by Teddy Oliver, Dennis Wood, Gary Hoopingarner, and Waylon Orr. The rest of the top ten were Austin Harvey, Josh Moss, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Robbie Patterson, and Brian Lewis, Sr. Martin and Passwaters, Sr. won the heats, while Wood was credited with top time.

In the Canton Auto Salvage Compact division, point leader Kyle Grove dashed his way to the front in the 15-lap feature. Grove took the lead from Striejewke in the first five laps of the race and sailed away out front. Late in the race, Tim Frederick, Striejewske, and Dan Buckey started to close the gap but came up short as Grove was in cruise control mode. For Grove, it was the fifth time he had found victory lane. However, in post race inspection, a couple of fellow competitors attempted an engine claim, which the Grove Racing Team turned down. Turning down an engine claim takes away all finishes from the night and eliminates the driver and team from competition for the rest of the season. Tim Frederick became the Mid-Season champion in his Route 39 Auto Salvage/Leggett Tire #18. Following Frederick were Striejewske, Buckey, Larry Ennis, Jr., and Kyle Finlayson, the top qualifier.

In the Compact B feature, Zack Cogar held the top spot over the first five laps of the race but was overtaken by Barnhill, Ohio driver Cameron Walker on lap six. With about five laps to go, Leeza Moore moved into second but came up about one second short at the checkered. Following Walker and his Don’s Primitives #28 to his first win were Moore, Ryan Shreffler, Cogar, and Chad Wise.

In Compact preliminary action, Kyle Finlayson, Laney Striewjewske, and Zack Cogar took wins.

The Finish Line Motors Mini Truck class had five drivers line up for the green in the 12-lap event. Amazingly, when the green waved, the field went about five wide on the frontstretch as the two fastest trucks, Mike Martin and John Bertram tried to get out front first. Martin dove to the bottom with Bertram to the extreme high lane. Bertram slammed the door shut heading into turn one, while Martin damaged a tire in the battle. Bertram cruised to his first victory of the season but the third for his Lake’s Auto Recycling/Tony Newman Roofing #155 truck. Keith Anderson had a solid run in second, while Bruce George, Martin, and Derek Cordia were the rest of the top five. Martin won the heat and set fast time.
