Ohio's Fun Place to Race!!

 The Template Body Late Model Series that was supposed to race this past Saturday, June 2 at Midvale Speedway had a rough race the previous week at Sandusky Speedway. Therefore, the event was canceled and fans were treated to a general admission discount and extra races and laps for Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Stock Compacts. Despite a rain delay between qualifying and racing, action was exciting throughout the prelims and features and the events ran quickly as the program was done by 9:30.
Adam Stewart, despite a hard crash in the feature one week ago, was back this week in his Stewart Flooring #62. After a tough week of work on the car and a tough one emotionally as his grandmother passed away, Stewart claimed wins in the heat and pursuit. When the green dropped on the feature, Stewart raced into the lead, looking for his first Summit Racing Modified feature win. However, a lap three caution slated a double file restart. When the green waved, Kevin McClintock became the new leader and looked destined to pick up his first feature win of the season. However, a couple of cautions just short of halfway created two double file restarts. The second one had Randy Smart, this year's dominant driver, flanking McClintock on the outside lane. When the green dropped, McClintock was quick enough to hold off Smart's run on the highside. However, it was clear to see that Smart's car was rolling the bottom much smoother than that of the leader. On lap 15, Smart drove to the inside on the backstretch and shot into the lead. Just one more caution slowed the pace after that and Smart cruised to the win by 2.012 seconds over Lee McCreery, who had a great rebound after going to the back early in the race. Also following the Andy W Miller Podiatry/Russ Moore & Sons Concrete #17 were Justin Courtney, Alex Rosenberry, and McClintock. Rounding out the top ten were Stewart, Matthew Mills, Greg Hole, Tom Ertle, and Dave Dobbins who was involved in a crash. Dobbins won the dash, McClintock the fast heat, while Stewart took the second heat and the pursuit. Smart set fast time.
A few early cautions slowed the pace in the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock 30-lap feature, while Josh Anders was out front. The Norton, Ohio driver led the first eight laps before Dover, Ohio driver Bill Aubihl assumed the point. Following Aubihl into the second spot was defending two-time division champion, Teddy Oliver. Moments later, caution waved on lap ten. This set up a double file restart that had the event win hinging upon it. Despite a good restart by Oliver, Aubihl was able to fend off his challenge and stay out front. One other caution slowed the pace, but Aubihl was able to win by a small 0.29 second margin. Following the Ace Auto Body/Jim's Service #31 were Oliver, Bill Shimko, Anders, and George Bowers. Others in the top ten were Joe Linard, Gary Hoopingarner, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Tim Lynn, and Vince Martin. Shimko won the dash, Aubihl and Bowers the heats, and Oliver the pursuit. Joe Oliver set fast time.
Braden Swaney, the 2011 Stock Compact division champion, held off Jeffrey Orr on the opening start of the 12-lap big track Compact feature. In a race that saw just six cars start, the competition was extremely close and exciting as just about everyone had a chance at victory. The CJ's Drive Thru/My Museum Tattoo #27 came to the finish line at the end just a few feet ahead of Wes Ennis, Jeffrey Orr, Mike Swaney, and Tim Frederick. Orr claimed the dash and heat wins, while Swaney won the pursuit. Ennis set quick time.
Kohlten Bryan led the first couple of laps in the Stock Compact feature event before division point leader, Blaine Salsberry cruised by. It was all over at that point, other than the portly lady singing, as Salsberry had claimed all four feature wins coming into the week. The Tolloti Pipe/Alpa Lanes #29 was followed to its fifth feature win by Bryan, Gary Gibson, Dan Buckey, and Gary Murray. Allen Clark won the dash, while Gary Gibson won the heat and pursuit. Dan Buckey set fast time in qualifying.
Up next will be the third Spectator Drag event of the season this coming Saturday, June 9. The Late Model division will be back in action, while the Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Stock Compacts will also race.
Pit gates will open at 3:00, hotlaps at 3:30, qualifying at 5:00, and racing will start at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
