Wild Hall Of Fame Night In The Books
August 2, 2008

Wild Hall Of Fame Night In The Books
It was a rough but action filled night, this past Saturday, August 2, at Midvale Speedway. Drivers struggled to keep cars in the right direction, carnage resulted, and tempers flared. The night was highlighted by the intermission Old-Timers and Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony. Four drivers and two officials were entered into the Midvale Speedway Hall Of Fame.

At intermission, Midvale Speedway officials held their third annual Old-Timers night with the second annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. A number of the racetrack’s greatest were in attendance for the pre-race meal and the halftime introductions. Announced as new Hall of Fame members were former officials Don Wagner (announcer) and Roy King (track crew member). The four drivers added were Bob Wooster, Delmar Clark, Dave Gilland, and Virgil Tinlin.

The first feature on the track was the 20-lap Tusco Net Sport Stock main. Jerry McNealy took the early lead from his pole starting position. As cars in the field battled, some contact resulted and top qualifier Ron Dague took advantage. Dague, who started seventh, picked up a handful of spots in one swoop and eventually took the lead on lap five. From this point on, Dague cruised to victory finishing off his clean sweep for the evening as he earlier set fast time and won the heat. Following the Barnhill Storage/Tolloti Pipe #75 to the stripe in the feature were Randy Smart, Kevin McClintock, Scott Archer, and Rich Dessecker.

In the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model 25-lapper, polesitter Bob Schneider, Jr. raced out front early, while John Ambrose took over the second spot from Greg Beule. Sixth place starter Ryan Tedesco, who had come close to wins the previous two weeks, was on the move in the outside groove. Tedesco moved into fifth on lap two, fourth on lap four, second one lap later, and by lap 7 was out front leading the way. Numerous cautions plagued the event and negated a lot of passes that were being made throughout the field. Tedesco withstood the frequent restarts and put his Marathon Manufacturing/C.C. Performance #70 in victory lane for the second time this season. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver became the first repeat winner in the competitive class this season. Following him at the finish were Ambrose, Mike Miller, Tom Garbrandt, and Farmer Smith. Darrel Dexter, Rich Marcum, Joel McKnight, Bryant Smith, and Bubba Smith completed the top ten. Ron Jaberg, Jr., Rick Sibila, and Nick Grubbs won the three heat race events, while Bubba Smith set fast time in the extremely tight qualifying session.

Fans have been treated to some awesome Late Model fields this season. In fact, over the last three nights, the car count has been 22, 24, and 23 respectively. Unfortunately, cautions have been an issue on a number of occasions this season. Some drivers have been impatient at times, while others are inexperienced and just looking for track time to get the handle of the class. Officials are hoping that over the last five Late Model nights this season, the class stays strong in numbers but drivers elect to use a little more give-and-take to make the division as special as it really should be.

The Midvale Speedway Pure Stock division has put together some stronger fields and better racing over the last several nights. Luther Chambers, who earlier in the night won his first career heat race, led the first six laps. Veteran racer, Todd Miller made the first pass to take over the lead by lap seven. Miller, looking for win #2 this year, was running strong out front, but it turned out to be too strong as he was clocked under his qualifying time. That handed the lead to Tory Gibbs, who most thought would claim an easy victory. However, with six laps to go, the point leader’s ride started spewing fluid and had to make a pitstop to rectify the problem. The new leader was Lee McCreery. The part-time racer was fired up earlier in the night due to a problem in the heat race, but he put the issues behind him, started at the tail, and raced a great race to be in contention for the win. His only challenge came from last week’s feature winner Rich Schweitzer. Schweitzer went to the high lane and was just about to clear McCreery when a caution negated the pass. After the restart, Schweitzer couldn’t get the run he needed and McCreery claimed his first career feature victory. Following the Keith Anderson Racing #32 were Schweitzer, Tad Grove, Pat Moore, and Luther Chambers. Tory Gibbs, Bob Passwaters, Sr., Dick Aubihl, Brian Minard, and Phil Bunton, Jr. completed the top ten. Schweitzer and Chambers won the heats, while Grove was top qualifier.

On a night in which over-aggressiveness was prevalent, even the Parkway Suzuki Compact fast feature was rough. Derek Grewell took the lead from the pole and was in good shape with John McNutt, Felicia Myers, and Cliff Cox all in second at different times. That was until he and Cox got together in turn one, with the race leader spinning. Caution waved and Grewell was given his spot back with three to go. On the restart, A.J. Diano put his ride in the outside lane and on the final circuit was able to edge Grewell for the victory. After crossing the stripe, Grewell and Diano went spinning into turn one, then got out of their cars on the backstretch to further discuss the matter. Diano made his way to victory lane moments later to celebrate his impressive victory from the fourteenth starting spot. The A. Diano Concrete #09 was followed by Grewell, Kyle Rector, Kelly McNutt, and Don Rufener, Jr. Tim Westerfield, Jr., Johnny Campbell, Rich Hess, Tom Barrett, and Cliff Cox were top ten finishers.

Arguably one of the cleanest races of the night was the final Compact feature. Taylor Moore and Isaac Ferrebee brought the 19-car field to the green with Ferrebee bolting into the lead. Many time Compact feature winner over the last few years, Jesse Page, took over to pace the field on lap four before Brad Henry took his turn out front on lap six. The lead continued to involve a revolving door, as rookie Max McCartney became the pace setter with five to go. McCartney claimed the heat win earlier in the night with much of his family in the stands due to Old-Timers night. McCartney’s Grandpa Don Mowls and uncle Joe Mowls were two of Midvale’s early racers in the 50’s and were among the honorees at intermission. On the final lap, McCartney and Henry caught two slower cars. Not heeding the move-over flag, the cars raced in the preferred lane creating contact between the leader and Luke Sampson coming to the checkered. Sampson then slid up the banking in front of Henry as cars jumbled coming to the stripe. McCartney claimed the victory but in the haste of picking up his first career feature win skipped the tech line in the pits after the race. That gave the official victory to Jesse Page with Bob Passwaters, Jr., Tammy Rufener, Jason Anthony, and Henry completing the top five. Other top ten finishers were Larry Ennis, Justin Vanfossen, Pat Carnes, Isaac Ferrebee, and Taylor Moore.

Jason Morgan, Johnny Campbell, Jim Campbell, and Dan Konovsek claimed the heat race wins, while Don Rufener, Jr. won the pursuit. Rich Dunlap was the fast qualifier for the second week in-a-row.

Officials would like to thank all of the former and current drivers for coming out for Old-Timers Night 2008. It’s great to see all who have called Midvale Speedway home.

Racing will continue this coming Saturday, August 9 with the 2008 Faster Pastor race for area preachers. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s will all race.
