 Over 120 cars were in the pits eager to race on J.D. Byrider night at Midvale Speedway. Action included preliminaries and features for Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts.
Glen Jewell and Dave Watson set the two fastest qualifying laps in the Tolloti Pipe Modified division. After qualifications, the top 8 qualifiers drew pills for their starting spots. Watson took the one and Jewell took the two to make up the first row. Everyone knew, including the two drivers, that the start of the race was the key because both drivers are extremely fast by themselves. As soon as the green dropped, the front row starters were locked in an exciting side-by-side battle that had Watson looking for his first career win and Jewell looking for his seventh of the season. Jewell, the point leader, unbelievably stayed on the outside of the rookie for a handful of circuits, nearly closing the door, before Watson fought back and raced into the lead. As the laps wore down in the 20-lapper, Watson pulled away from the veteran driver to claim his first career feature win in his first ever season of racing. Following the Pine Ridge Condos/Doug Moore Leasing #1 were Jewell, Will Walker, Tim Skinner, and Rick Elkins, Jr. Jewell was the only driver in the top five that is not a rookie this season. Keith Elliott, Mark Willison, Mike Bowers, Mel Robinson, and Mark Enos finished off the top ten. Willison and Jim McCune won the heats.
Bear Schwartz and Farmer Smith have been battling all season long, in the Performance Race Fuels Late Model division, for the top spot in points. In qualifying, Smith set fast time at a 14.58 with a brand new motor under the hood. After qualifying, the twelve pill was drawn which put Schwartz in the sixth starting spot and Smith in the twelfth position. As the green dropped, Rich Marcum raced in front of Bob Scott to lead the field in the 25-lapper. Early, Schwartz started his move, as within a couple of laps the veteran driver moved into the third spot. With a few laps in, Marcum was pulling away, while Scott was running second in his loose handling car. Eventually, the car’s setup caused Scott to spin in the third turn. That gave second to Schwartz. When the green again dropped, Schwartz was expected to make a run at Marcum for the lead. However, Marcum was looking for his first career feature win and was looking extremely strong. A couple of laps later, though, the caution flag came out and Marcum was sent to the tail for running under his qualifying time. With Schwartz out front, Greg Beule ran in second, Tom Garbrandt third and Farmer Smith and Ryan Tedesco finishing off the top five. The rest of the race was anything but bland, as the ASA Late Model standout driver, Tedesco, put on a show in the outside lane. First he went around Smith, then Garbrandt, then he slipped back and had to start over. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver did the same thing a couple of times, once working his way into second before slipping back to third. In what was a very exciting race, Schwartz went on to pick up his fifth feature win of the season, while Beule, Tedesco, Garbrandt, and Darrel Dexter completed the top five behind the New Image Homes/Cutting Edge #77. The rest of the top ten were Smith, Bob Gainer, Ron Jaberg, Jr., William Robison, and Bob Scott. Dexter and Marcum won the heats.
In Tusco Net Sport Stock feature action, point leader Kevin McClintock and Joe Linard drew pills that put them first and second on the starting grid. McClintock raced into the lead easily, but that doesn’t mean that Linard did not put up a fight. Most thought that McClintock would pull away, but Linard had other plans as his dad’s #2 racer was extremely strong. A couple of times Linard looked low, but McClintock was able close the door on him each time. After many cautions, McClintock was declared the winner as the time limit on the race had long expired. Linard, Bubba Smith, Bill Aubihl, and Gabe Pringle followed the Square Deal Auto Parts/Glass Lumber Company #38 to its fourth feature win of the season. Don Rufener, Jr., Doug McMillen, Keith Thomas, Terry Colletti, and Paul Murray finished off the top ten. McMillen and Stalnaker won the heats, while Smith set fast time.
Greg Grove set fast time and came from the back to win the fast heat in the Papa John’s Pure Stock division. He was the favorite to clean house, as he tried to win it all for his sponsor and the night’s sponsor at the track, J.D. Byrider. Grove, starting tenth in the fast feature, made some quick moves to get into the top five. He then saw the opportunity to try a three wide outside lane pass beside Paul Parson and Al Street. Grove, though, ran out of room in turn four and his #3 racer eventually spun in turn one, ending his chance at victory. Paul Parson, the leader for much of the event, got sideways out of turn four and eventually slid up the banking, clipping the point leader Randy Smart’s race car, ending his night. That gave the lead to veteran driver Rich Schweitzer. The New Philadelphia, Ohio competitor held off challenges from Al Street to go on to victory. Street, Blake Mackey, Teddy Oliver, and Greg Grove followed the Sugarcreek Industries/Roundhouse Auto Tech #84. Scott Archer, John Leasure, Rob Scott, Chuck Elkins, and Paul Parson finished off the top ten. Grove, Parson, and Rocky Moore won the heats.
In the second Pure Stock feature, Rocky Moore picked up the victory in his Russ Moore & Sons Concrete/Moran’s Night Life #62. Chuck Sampson finished second, but his car was found too low in post race inspection. The official top five included Bob Passwaters, Sr., Tim Rodgers, Nick Cross, and Dan Moore.
Adam Mishler, looking for his first feature win of the season, led lap-after-lap of the Compact fast feature. However, Dale Beatty and Josh Grove were racing through the pack. As Beatty took second, he followed the third-year driver until Mishler slipped up the banking, opening the door for Beatty to race to the lead. Grove then took second and challenged Beatty, but to no avail, as Beatty grabbed the victory. Grove, Mishler, Perry Nave, and Kelly McNutt rounded out the top five. The rest of the top ten were Kyle Grewell, Bryant Smith, Jason Morgan, Jim Poole, and Tye Kelly.
The second feature victory went to Kenny Jewell. Chris Smith, Tammy Rufener, Jesse Page, and Bubba Smith followed the East Canton, Ohio driver. In post race inspection, Chris Smith’s #94 racer was found with heated springs adding Earl Scranton to the top five. Tad Grove, Richard Duvall, James Domer, Kenny Griffith, and Josh Truxall finished off the top ten.
Kenny Ford came from the back of the field to win the third Compact feature. Allen Andrews, Mike Roth, Jerry Kimble, and Bruce Gibson were the official top five, as third place finisher Eric Anderson was found with illegal springs. Lissa Courtney, Paul Stull, John Wissman, Jr., Bob Viertel, and Ryan Kopp rounded out the top ten.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday, August 14, as all five regular divisions will be in action. At intermission, the first ever Pit Crew Competition will take place at the speedway. Each division’s top three point contenders will be invited to compete. If one elects not to compete, then the next place competitor will have the option to participate.
